"They were my friends, they were my teachers, they were my entertainment and they were safe."

It was --and still is the 'quiet time' in our house---even the puppy was quiet and watching--over the years.
They learned good things without knowing they were learning.

As a GenX, one thing that was always important to our generation growing up was PBS.

Sesame Street taught me how to count to 10. Big Bird taught me the alphabet.

The Electric Company taught me right, wrong, and Spider-Man.

But Mr Rogers, a fellow Pittsburgher, taught me how to be me. Daniel, Lady Elaine, King Friday, and Henrietta were always there.

They were my friends, they were my teachers, they were my entertainment and they were safe.

But now, the felon administration and the Republican Party have taken that learning, that safety, away from children everywhere so that billionaires can have a tax cut that they don’t need.

But children DO need PBS.

They want to eliminate healthcare, education, housing, and food for the masses. This country will be a roiling, boiling mess if this goes on for years.

Loved him as I was raising my children. Still love him. We will see the end of TSF before we see the end of Sesame Street and many of the classics on PBS, even without federal funding.

Bill Alexander painter

Bill was 67 when his show ended, he lived 15 years longer afterwards, and had another show.

William Alexander (born Wilhelm Alexander;[1] 2 April 1915 – 24 January 1997), known as Bill Alexander on his TV show, was a German painter, art instructor, and television host. He was the creator and host of The Magic of Oil Painting (1974–1982) television series that ran on PBS in the United States. He co-wrote The Art of Bill Alexander and … (1987–1995), a series of books on wet-on-wet oil painting, based on different PBS series of the same form. He also taught the television painter Bob Ross his signature "quick" wet-on-wet technique.

Actually the first show was The Magic of Painting, and then was replaced with Bob Ross as The Joy Of Painting.

The Magic of Oil Painting is an American half-hour instructional television show hosted by painter Bill Alexander which ran from February 18, 1974 to May 10, 1982 on PBS, produced by member station KOCE in Huntington Beach, California. In each episode, Alexander taught techniques for landscape oil painting, completing a painting in each session, painting in a 16th-century style called alla-prima, now known as wet-on-wet. He was invited to record a pilot in late 1973 for KOCE. Alexander earned an Emmy for the show in 1979, making him the first painter to earn the award. The show is known for inspiring The Joy of Painting hosted by Bob Ross.[1][2]

The Joy of Painting is an American half-hour instructional television show. Created and hosted by painter Bob Ross, it ran from January 11, 1983, to May 17, 1994. In most episodes, Ross taught techniques for landscape oil painting, completing a painting in each session. Occasionally, episodes featured a guest artist who would demonstrate a different painting technique. The program followed the same format as its predecessor from 1974 to 1982, The Magic of Oil Painting, hosted by Ross's mentor Bill Alexander. In 2024, new episodes featuring paintings Ross had completed before his death and hosted by Nicholas Hankins were released.

These were from respective Wikipedia links, but they were all found from the first link.

Here is one William Alaxander show,

Love this! “… and enjoy the happy fresh morning!”

That theme music! Let’s start painting!

Puts me in a happy mood! Just watching that image appear on the canvas - pure magic! How you can suggest shadows and sunlight and depth, and in just minutes!

I LOVE THIS STUFF!!! Oh the art classes I went to, after school, LOVED it LOVED it LOVED it!!! It could get so meditative as you worked with the brushes, the paints, the blending and brush strokes and the barest bits of highlighting… you can turn a plain flat white canvas into living breathing reality and imagine how peaceful and restful it can be, deep down, just to look at it. Good soothing medicine after a grating slow-motion fight through traffic.

Sigh… I LOVED those after-school art classes. So therapeutic! Who needs a shrink when you can paint a haven for your mind, with just a few colors, tools, and a little time?

Really takes me back…

We enjoyed his show very much, though we are not painters. I'm a guitar player, and my wife enjoys sewing. We watched on Sunday mornings and it seemed to make the day more pleasant.
I'm appalled at the attacks on NPR/PBS, as well as the hell-scape unfolding in our Country and poisoning our Soul.
