DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) — TV6 Investigates is taking a deeper look into the science of sweeteners after Coca-Cola announced it is introducing a line of cane sugar.

The move came after pressure from President Donald Trump and the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative led by Health and Human Services Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The switch would replace high-fructose corn syrup in Coke’s new line -- sugar that’s produced from corn grown in the Midwest. The move would hurt corn farmers and likely lead to higher prices at the grocery store.

Corn was used as a sweetener over sugar was because the American sugar producers had placed a high tariff to protect their business from cheaper producers in the Caribbean. I think most US sugar production is in FL.
