I checked a Wikipedia article last night with information about CTE, the traumatic brain injury that the shooter may have believed he had. The article says that the condition has been found in 99 percent of the brains of deceased NFL players. The condition can only be fully diagnosed through autopsy.
A New York Post article that I read last night said that the shooter played football while he attended high school in California, but he didn't play professionally.
He may have blamed NFL playing rules for his condition. A note he carried in his pocket asked to have his brain studied.
I'm sorry that I didn't try to post a link to the NY Post article. It was the wee hours of the morning here when I read it and I was too sleepy to look up how to post a link.
The Wikipedia entry did state that NFL players had the highest incidence of CTE. Maybe the shooter formed his opinion from that?
The Wiki article also describes some pretty dire outcomes to CTE, comparing it to dementia and Alzheimers.

Preliminary reports aren't always correct. I only know what I was able to read last night.
The whole thing is tragic and sad.
And, yes, he should not have had access to a weapon, just like no one who isn't on a battle field needs the kind of weapon that he was carrying.
The article that you linked had some additional information. It said he was employed as a surveillance person at the casino he worked for.
The article also said he had some kind of private investigator card, which was expired before the time of the shooting.
A real mess, that's for sure.
