My question is how were under age girls taken to an island and their families were unaware? When my daughter was a teen we trusted her, but knew where she was at every moment. I'm not trying to judge so much as I am completely perplexed.

I now see the timeline. The exploitation occurred from 1999 through 2003. VG was born in 1983 which would make it that she was sixteen when the crimes against her began. Such horrendously disgusting actions by Maxwell and Epstein.

Two of my siblings ran away from home when they were sixteen and my parents only vaguely knew what they were up to. My parents were afraid that if they pushed harder they'd lose contact with them altogether.

I quit high school at sixteen and my parents' security was knowing I was in college or working but they never inquired too deeply about it.

Three of my grandparents had left home at age fifteen or sixteen and both my parents were latchkey kids who didn't really know what good parenting was because they themselves hadn't experienced it. My mom was a neighborhood waif looked after by prostitutes and showgirls while her parents worked, or else she was spending the summers at her grandparents cattle ranch, where she was expected to carry her own weight.

My siblings and I were all very resourceful by the time we were sixteen and intolerant of parental support or advice, especially when that support or advice came with strings attached.

When I was 15 years old to 24 my parents really didn't know what kind of trouble I was getting into. Whenever I was actually talking to them it was to reassure them that everything was well, which was usually not the case.

I can easily imagine a naive parent thinking "My daughter is working for somebody wealthy. This is her ticket to a better life," and leaving it at that. Or something worse.

Don't blame the victims.

9. I read it as a logistics question

On a related note, for a long time I didn't understand how people could stay in an abusive relationship, until I understood that it doesn't generally start that way, it grows over time. The great irony being that in some much smaller ways I have kept myself in less than good relationships way longer than I should have out of a twisted sense of loyalty or being able to fix people/groups.

i’m the 6th of 7 kids, w an alkie father, and trust me, my folks had no idea what i was up to when i was 16. i did sleep in my own bed almost every night, but other than that, they swallowed whatever story i told them. if i said i was sleeping over at a friend’s house, they accepted that. if i said i was babysitting, they had no idea i had a boy over when the kids were in bed.

and who knows how many of these girls were already being sexually abused in their own families.
