Direct File was a free, easy option for folks to file their taxes online with the IRS.

It was popular, impactful, & accessible—so of course the Trump Administration had to kill it.

This is another shameful giveaway to giant corporations like TurboTax that rip our families off.

The Biden-era IRS free filing tool, Direct File, is “gone,” IRS Commissioner Billy Long said.

IRS Commissioner Billy Long killed Direct File July 28, 2025—just 5 months after 140k Americans used it to avoid TurboTax's $50B fee racket. Trump's admin didn't just bury the program; they salted the earth where public service once grew.

The IRS spent $24.6M developing this free tool through Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, achieving 90% user satisfaction. Now $75M/year gets redirected to "audit priorities" while TurboTax's parent company Intuit—which spent $3.8M lobbying against IRS modernization—gets 8 million new customers. Corporate welfare dressed as policy.

America's tax code now reads: "Thou shalt pay middlemen."
