Trump freezes $200 million in UCLA science and medical research funding, citing antisemitism

The Trump administration has frozen hundreds of science, medical and other federal grants to UCLA worth nearly $200 million, citing the university’s alleged “discrimination” in admissions and failure to “promote a research environment free of antisemitism.”

The decision to pull funding comes after Atty. Gen.Pam Bondi and the Justice Department said this week that UCLA would pay a “heavy price” for acting with “deliberate indifference” to the civil rights of Jewish and Israeli students who complained of antisemitic incidents since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, Israel’s ensuing war in Gaza and campus protests the events spurred last year.

The cancellation of grants is the first large-scale targeted funding claw-back against UCLA under the Trump administration. Until now, the White House has largely focused its attempts to remake higher education on elite East Coast schools such as Columbia, Brown and the University of Pennsylvania. Each has reached deals with the government in recent weeks over issues including admissions, Jewish student life, student discipline, antisemitism training and gender identity in sports.

In a letter to UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk dated Wednesday, the National Science Foundation wrote that it was terminating grants because “the University of California – Los Angeles continues to engage in race discrimination including in its admissions process, and in other areas of student life.”

After all, don't they teach that the Jews killed Jesus, Our Lord and Savior?

3. It's just an excuse. Trump is pulling millions from all the research institutions.

He just ripped millions in research funding from Duke, citing "DEI."

Trump wants to destroy medical research.

He gets to bully the intellectuals and elites, make them bend to his will, and get bribed. It’s insane that no one has stopped him, but I hope Dems play the same game in the future with Republican schools and states.

11. C. S. Lewis recognized this sort of anti-intellectualism long ago, but it applies very well to Trump and his followers

I have posted this before. C. S. Lewis, in his satire “Screwtape Proposes a Toast”, has the demon Screwtape, in his address to the College of Tempters, describes how to take advantage of the resentment that many mediocre people have towards the more talented. Describing this type, Screwtape says (page 8)

“And therefore resents. Yes, and therefore resents every kind of superiority in others; denigrates it; wishes its annihilation. Presently he suspects every mere difference of being a claim to superiority. No one must be different from himself in voice, clothes, manners, recreations, choice of food: “Here is someone who speaks English rather more clearly and euphoniously than I — it must be a vile, upstage, lah-di-dah affectation. Here's a fellow who says he doesn't like hot dogs — thinks himself too good for them, no doubt. Here's a man who hasn't turned on the jukebox — he's one of those goddamn highbrows and is doing it to show off. If they were honest-to-God all-right Joes they'd be like me. They've no business to be different. It's undemocratic.” “

Screwtape points out that this resentment leads to a desire of the resentful to install a dictator who will ‘cut the superior people they hate down to size’

Also, in his children's book The Last Battle Lewis describes a phenomenon very similar to what we are experiencing with Trumpism. Fooling people into believing something through outrageous lies and deception. And how some people will not be convinced that they were fooled, no matter what.

As leverage.

Conservative schools are a hotbed of racism and misogyny. They also love their college sports and frats, where a lot of this stuff festers. Get creative and go after that. Maybe future generations won’t be brainwashed by Republican propaganda on their campus.

6. If he cared about antisemitism, he would defund Tennessee

"A couple in Knoxville, Tennessee filed a lawsuit against the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services this week alleging that they were denied services by a state-funded foster care agency because they are Jewish.

Elizabeth and Gabriel Rutan-Ram told TODAY that they first connected with the Holston United Methodist Home for Children in January of 2021, when they were hoping to adopt a child from Florida. Elizabeth Rutan-Ram said that state required the couple to have specific training — including Tennessee-mandated foster parent training and a home-study certification — and after reaching out to multiple agencies, the Holston United Methodist Home for Children was the only agency she could find that offered that training for out-of-state adoptions.

Elizabeth told TODAY that she asked if her and Gabriel's faith would be a problem for the organization early in the process.

"I asked early on if it would be an issue and they said they didn't think so, but that they would get back to me, and in the meantime we kept working on everything," Elizabeth said. "We had signed up for the class. The class was supposed to start that day. I had a check in my hand that I was going to drive out to them ... And I got an email that very clearly said they could not work with us because we didn't match up with their values."...(more)
