An illustration of the tattoo on the woman's right forearm revealed in new scans
Science correspondentHigh-resolution imaging of tattoos found on a 2,500 year old Siberian "ice mummy" have revealed decorations that a modern tattooist would find challenging to produce, according to researchers.
The intricate tattoos of leopards, a stag, a rooster, and a mythical half-lion and half-eagle creature on the woman's body shed light on an ancient warrior culture.
Archaeologists worked with a tattooist, who reproduces ancient skin decorations on his own body, to understand how exactly they were made.
The tattooed woman, aged about 50, was from the nomadic horse-riding Pazyryk people who lived on the vast steppe between China and Europe.

He didn't like it when strangers stared, as his "skin illustrations" tended to come alive.

"Don't call them tattoos. They're skin illustrations." has stuck with me ever since I heard it.

(77,795 posts)I was 20 from a sheltering family background and tatoos were unheard of. In the first year of military was doing the military "manly" things - smoking (tobacco), drinking. But still had upbringing taboo fears. So in the waiting area of the parlour, a young guy came in, all upset complaining, told the tatooist, "I wanted the head of a JAGUAR and this looks like a POSSUM!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I was filled with trepidation and had the cartoon in mind where a character does a long-stretch-of-leg to get out of the scene, but ultimately stayed.
Got an obligatory Navy anchor on the upper arm, but it's sort of small and crowded and just a prison-type outline. I only wear short sleeves, so it's never seen, but my pot belly doesn't allow for going shirtless anyway.

I don't have any tattoos - my grandfather had some, so I always associate them with old people.
