I'd like to see this in some larger populated areas. Lexington, Frankfurt, Louisville.

Do you mean the statistics that are displayed here for Owsley County? Being from Lexington, although I no longer live there, I would bet that Lexington and Louisville and maybe, Frankfort have a MUCH higher employment rate, education level, higher income levels, lower number of food stamp recipients, more liberals or people who vote Democrat, and definitely, a higher racial diversity. I believe this to be true of most states. The poorly informed, bigoted "takers" who consistently vote against their own interests(otherwise known as Republican) can be found in all states and mostly in the rural areas. The larger cities and towns nearly everywhere tend to vote blue.

It is good for anecdotal evidence such as this report.

I just want us not to get caught up in the "Many good people told me they love/hate..." mode.

I lived in Louisville, worked in Frankfort, traveled quite a bit throughout Kentucky. I love the people and the country but not the insularity - especially that comes from being a "border state".

An entire county with a population that tiny is highly unlikely to be representative of the state as a whole. Or anything other than counties with similarly tiny populations.

DU tends to be very snobby about housing. I live in a beautiful apartment and was once told here that living out of a shopping cart is better than living in an apartment.

I lost my union job and we ended up living with my wife's daughter and granddaughter. I had to move.
I cannot afford another house or even an apartment in So. Cal. I am a roommate at 70.
It fits my SS and pension. Pretty bad when you can't afford a place for two retired people.

Why would I want a house so big that 2 rooms are just storage?

as I see at https://www.city-data.com/county/Owsley_County-KY.html just under 92% 'white' and about 88% 'republican.' I do see that income is about half the rest of the state but don't see any better proxies for 'food stamp' use. There are some federal expediture numbers but I'd have to to a deeper dive than I can muster on a friday evening after a long week.

Grew up in an area where there were a number of communities like this. There's no hope, no jobs, young people leave, and no one cares. They actually feel like everyone has abandoned them, and they don't have the resources to get back on their feet. But they're not bad people and they're not trying to 'own the libs' by living under awful conditions.

Nowadays, those little communities are gone (I moved from the shit little town I spent the latter half of my childhood in) and everything is sold off and gentrified.

If you're going to punch down, punch down on the billionaires.

These people vote against their own best interests. They are willing participants in their own economic repression. Although getting up off their lazy redneck asses and working for a living sure couldn’t hurt.

No matter how wretched or hopeless their lives may be, no matter what Democrats do to reach out to them, show them a successful black person or mention the word ‘abortion’, and they’ll skitter right back to the people making their lives so miserable.

If they derive even transient joy from “ownin’ the libs”, then they can kiss my liberal Democratic, Blue State living, six-figure salary-earning ass.
