Elizabeth Spiers was right on target with her previous analysis. She alluded to expecting the White House to put out their own data which will be fake. I'm not sure exactly what she was thinking they would do to produce the fake data, but I honestly think it would be extremely difficult for them to put out fake data under the BLS "brand". Could that result in a move to abolish the BLS? I believe there are certain things that by law are supposed to come from the BLS, but that alone wouldn't stop them from getting rid of it (or trying to). If they did, it would create massive chaos. BLS not only produces all of this important national economic data, but several of the programs they run (including the jobs count and unemployment rate data) have a state component which is funded by BLS and uses the same survey inputs. That could mean the elimination of state and local jobs and unemployment data, and in turn eliminating hundreds of jobs across the 50 states. Having retired less than 3 years ago from one of these state programs, I am still close with many of these workers in multiple states. Suddenly, I'm very concerned about the future of many of my friends. It truly is a nightmare scenario.
