New York is joining the fight to redraw congressional maps, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and other state leaders said they would begin the process of redistricting in New York to benefit Democrats in response to Texas Republicans plans to alter that states congressional map ahead of schedule to create more GOP seats.
Said Hochul: If Republicans are willing to rewrite these rules to give themselves an advantage, then they are leaving us no choice. We must do the same.

(28,763 posts)We can't make changes there prior to that.
And then of course - comes the 2030 census. When NY is expected to lose two seats while TX/FL each pick up four.

(156,987 posts)I may be overstating it! I think there is some sort of legal way that they can do this now. I don't remember just what it is, however.

(4,795 posts)It's just more common to do it after a census and makes sense to do it after the most current population data is published.

(4,757 posts)The Democratic Party Lament of "if we do this than republicans will do that" is hopefully coming to an end.

(7 posts)Its about damn time some Democrats are fighting back. The reason Democrats are polling so low is because, for the most part the old guard are all pansies. Playing nice, too often. The rules need to be broken. They all need to be voted out of office, and replaced by younger, less compliant candidates.

(8,044 posts)It caused out turn out to fall last election which is part of why we are where we are. I think its the GOP that's pushing that messaqe now.
Out of all the people spreading it I've yet to find one who can name what is is that Democrats are supposed to be doing but aren't. The GOP has a majority in Congress so even though most votes against them are unanimous so we can't stop them there. We've had some luck with lower courts but the Supremes are in Fascist hands. Anything we get in the media gets ignore by MAGAs who are completely brainwashed.
The best hope now is to retake Congress but assholes like David Hogg are doing all they can to hurt our turnout next time, like what happened last time. Please stop spreading this lie and show some respect for the older folks. Age discrimination is every bit as bad as race discrimination. Experience is valuable.

(5,805 posts)Which requires passage in 2 consecutive sessions of the legislature. That will be 2025(which would require a special session), or 2026 for one cycle, then 2027 or 2028, which would be the second session.
Then it has to go to a ballot referendum.
It will take time.

Youre right, we always make allowances for their misdeeds, as if they are misguided children that will one day find their way. Eventually we had to accept that their is a feature, not a bug.
