I am so tired of Republicans fucking over our country.

At this point there is no good reason for anyone to vote Republican.

They are the party of total corruption, not law and order.

They are the party of reckless spending, not fiscal conservatism.

They are the party of rape and pedophilia, not "family values".

They are the party that doesn't care if the environment is destroyed. To hell with the grandchildren.

They are the party of anti-intellectualism. Let everyone read the Bible and nothing else. Erase history.

They are the party of anti-constitutionalism. To hell with the founding fathers.

They are the party of stealing elections. To hell with the rules.

And I don't think that I have heard it mentioned before.

I remember the old days when the South was Democratic, some very progressive but most right-wing. It was an uneasy alliance that fell apart quickly when President Johnson signed the civil rights legislation. There was a saying that a "New York Republican was like a Texas Democrat".
It occurs to me that being in the same party the actual liberal Democratic politicians, mostly from the North, were able to get concessions from the conservative Democratic politicians (soon to be Republicans) in the South.
Now the Republican party is dealing with these people, politicians and voters, who are authoritarians. And the Republicans are unable and mostly unwilling to control this cancer.
I'm not sure of the implications, other than a big thank you to the liberal Democratic politicians of old who kept the conservatives in line.

For the continuing benefit of the haves and have mores, at the expense of the poor and needy.

I learned in Catholic school that the poor and needy were the ones Jesus hung out with, and whose interests He prioritized.

...other countries have become fascistic or tyrannical, and yet, over time, have recovered, even become democratic. Now, it may take a few years, maybe a decade or two, but it's certainly possible. Look at Germany, Italy and Japan, just to name three. You and I may not be alive when this country gets back on its feet, but I believe it will happen.

...German to become a chemist.

Now, I'm sure German chemists are required to learn English.

A lot of suffering was required to bring Germany to where it is today, but it is not the world power that it once was.

I suspect the time will come when scientists will need to learn Chinese. Happily, my son is well underway.

As a scientific world power, the United States is finished. When you elevate the likes of the ignorant ex-Junkie RFK Jr. to oversee science, the damage will be irretreivable in the lifetime of anyone now living. It's not a spigot that one turns on and off.

First you said "What is taking place is not reversible." Pretty flat and definitive.

Then you said, "...the damage will be irretreivable in the lifetime of anyone now living."

That is quite different. I disagree with your first comment, but there is a lot of wiggle room in your second comment.

Too picky? Maybe. I tend to object when I see absolutist comments. As bad as things may be right now, I still retain some optimism. I am often a cynic, but I just can't shake the optimism.

...soothsaying all that much. If it makes you happy let me say that I predict, with the understanding that predictions are always subject to invalidation by results, that some of the damage will be irretreivable.

Consider the Mauna Loa Carbon Dioxide Observatory, the data of which I often reference in posts here, which has established a continuous record of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere since 1959. The orange pedophile in the White House wants to close it. Perhaps it will be bulldozed and replaced by a casino. Thus even if it's rebuilt, the data for 2026-2029 will be lost, irretreivable.

You are free of course to quibble all you want and I do not object. To me as a scientist with an understanding of what science involves, I'm not sanguine with, "Don't worry, be happy, everything will work out in the end." That's my perspective and you are of course free to hold yours.

Tue Aug 5, 2025, 01:25 PM

Just like after Reconstruction when white southerners gave poor whites the right to terrorize blacks with impunity, today's powerful white men are using the republican party's cultural issues to distract white voters from the redistribution of wealth. While the vast majority of magas support Democratic priorities, they have been brainwashed into ignoring policy in lieu of simply hating libs. They're all in when their leader blames everything on DEI (Blacks).

And then there are the uninformed voters who simply err on the side of those who have traditionally been most powerful come election time. The most powerful have always been white men who fight to preserve white male privilege. You could call it the Alpha Fascination Effect.

Long before "maga," I've been saying that conservatism has nothing to do with policy and everything to do with emotion and psychology. republicans have it much easier in the electoral game in spite of the fact no one wants lower wages, medical bankruptcy, and deadly weather patterns.
