Other than Ronald Reagan, it astounds me how much Trump can get away with lying. It not just little things; he is literally a pathological liar, who spews shit that is demonstratively false on a daily basis.

We know why the media and Congressional Republicans don't call him out to his face, and even when Democrats do in the media they are largely ignored. By how can a significant percentage of the American public still believe the lies that they would not accept from a junior high student?

They consistently demonized democrats, mainly based on abortion and accusations of socialism. Of course, they lied relentlessly to achieve this, ignoring the difference between the ethics of abortion and the legalization of abortion, and insisting that any government program that helped "others" was socialism. And of course, they had tons of bigotry, though in the early days it was more "coded" and "dog whistled" than it is today.

They branded the Republican Party as the only patriotic party and democrats as unamerican. They did this to the point it became a matter of identity and faith that republican meant good and democrat meant evil.

With more than a generation steeped in this nonsense, only then could someone like Donnie come along and get away with his lies. His supporters see him as a borderline savior, so they don't care about literally anything bad he says or does (they'll even get over the Epstein thing soon enough) because to them, he's a powerful leader on the side of good and he's fighting against the side of evil and they will allow him anything he wants because to them, they're basically in a holy way against democrats, abortion, socialism, etc., which a far the greater evil in their mind.

They're simply not equipped to identify an evil person on their side. They can't overcome decades of partisan training. They literally think they'd be siding with Satan if they criticize Donnie.

In their do-as-you're-told and don't-ask-questions world, it is not a long walk to join a political cult. Believing in lies is just part of the curriculum--as is the fear of not believing in them.

In their world, the story of Abraham binding his son Isaac to an alter for sacrifice in order to prove his faith is something to be heralded and not hidden. When you teach your children that it is reasonable for a deity to ask you to kill your own children as a profession of faith, you are planting the seeds for all sorts of other abuses being normal in their young minds.

And on the other side of that equation: believing that there is a deity that will punish your every sin means that when bad behavior goes unpunished it must be acceptable to said deity. Sure, there may be punishment in the afterlife, but the belief that anyone can ask for forgiveness at any time and be forgiven by a merciful god basically nullifies that fear.

Reason and logic have very difficult times climbing the walls of that fort....
