To defeat the Texas gerrymander, Democrats need to go nuclear

Excellent opinion piece in WaPo this morning. I hope Democratic leaders heed its suggestions to finally fight Republicans on their terms instead of simply complaining. Just fighting Trump is not enough. This opinion rightly suggest that state leaders band together to institute policies that hurt Republican states. The idea f mutual deterrence versus mutual destruction is good.

“During the decades-long nuclear standoff between the U.S. and Soviet Union, leaders on both sides relied on a state of mutually assured destruction to keep the two countries from stumbling into an apocalyptic war.

There are two strategic concepts from that era that apply well to Democrats today: counterforce and countervalue.
Counterforce posits that the best way to deter an opponent is to credibly threaten the use of one’s own nuclear capability to strike at the opponent’s nuclear forces. In the context of today’s redistricting wars, that means neutralizing the weapons Republicans are using — directly, surgically and proportionally — within the sandbox of redistricting, like we’re seeing from New York and California. They gerrymander their big red state; we gerrymander our big blue state.”

Snip

“It’s good that Democratic leaders are trying to leverage counterforce deterrence on redistricting. But, if New York, California and other blue states want to deter red state aggression more comprehensively, they also need to consider the grislier logic of countervalue.

In our domestic context, it means using the full weight of blue states’ market power, cultural influence and legal authority to raise the stakes of Republican red state aggression. That means making it harder for corporations to operate in states that obliterate fair elections. It means using their economic might to impose regulatory and economic costs that bite hard enough to make the constituents of even the most insulated legislator feel the pain. In other words, it means countering red state aggression with potential actions that go beyond reciprocity and may impose disproportionate costs.“

I’m not confident in our leaders to go nuclear against anyone or anything. I hope they would stop bringing a box of cookies to a gun fight. Unfortunately, congress members really are not the ones hurting. Tariffs are killing small business, home budgets, and others aspects of our everyday life. As democratically controlled congress would be in our best interest, congressmen and women will still get their paychecks, their free healthcare, travel stipends, etc. Democrats in the house and senate, please dig in and really put extreme pressure on the MAGAs right wing zealots, and help the people who voted for a decent country.

Since I have been freaking out. Maybe we need to start checking bank accounts to see how comfy everyone is before they are sent to washington?

I want my reps as pissed off as I am, and Im not sure how we get there when it seems like a lot of them are very well off.

Democratic leadership is nonexistent. They do nothing except write letters and give useless speeches on the floor in the senate and house.

this topic gets pushed to the forefront. For 40 years we've let red states run the show through their bullying tactics, even though red areas do not represent the majority of America. Time to push back hard.

Contact these folks to let them know we want them to go nuclear by gerrymandering California.

Mike McGuire, President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate, (916) 651-4002, senator.mcguire@senate.ca.gov

Robert A. Rivas, Speaker, CA House of Representatives, (916) 319-2029, assemblymember.rivas@assembly.ca.gov

Leave a message, send a text. Let these folks know we want them to fight. Freedom, democracy, our health and well being are all on the line.

start removing repubs from the voting rolls as the red states like Texas, Florida and Georgia do.

If they start removing voters from red districts in blue states perhaps the other red states to stop.

They do these things with impunity because they know democrats are mostly gutless and won't fight back.

Punch the bully in the nose a few times and he'll likley leave you alone.
