Pete Hegseth who was born about as far north as you can get in the U.S. (Minneapolis) is an ardent spokesman for venerating traitors of the confederacy. He wants to restore statues and monuments of conspirators who waged war to preserve slavery.
I've said for years that the confederacy took over the republican party and Pete gives more proof. In the post-civil rights era the republican party sold what was left of its soul to welcome the great migration of disaffected white segregationists from the Democratic Party. Not only did the racial animus of the confederacy not dissipate over time, it spread throughout republicans of the North who have since taken it upon themselves to market racism as everything but racist.
Now Kegseth defends public display of confederates because it's history. Yes, these men who attempted to destroy the U.S. were a part of history, but in what other case do we build statues in reverence to our past enemies? Where are the monuments to Osama bin Laden or Adolph Hitler (though that may not be far off)? Of course the "history" excuse falls flat. These republican keepsakes are markers for the white supremacy that keeps the republican party running.

(3,888 posts)Michael Steele too until he came around. Some people are of the mindset that:
1. Being favorable to an establishment that looks down on them will offer them protection
2. Being favorable to an establishment that looks down on them will offer them status
In the case of the people you mentioned, they were right. They get some kind of reward.
That's what say I.
Addendum: In the case of some (Tim Scott) it causes visible conflicts as Tim Scott is somewhat interested in criminal justice reform, but only as far as his party will allow.
