My wife and I went 5 Guys in Orlando yesterday and I almost choked at the final total.
Nearly $28 for 2 cokes and 2 burgers.
Inflation is skyrocketing under Trump and DeSantis (in Florida). Youre better off NOT eating out! Save your money and dont go to restaurants because its not worth it
Florida, and the entire US, are unaffordable!!

And there's a lot of fraud in the largely unregulated olive oil business overseas - you might not be getting what you thought you paid for, while there are strict standards for California olive oil. I read this a few years ago, https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/olive-oils-dark-side and stopped buying the imported stuff.

I know Amazon is the devil, but I buy all my groceries from Fresh and have not seen any of the outrageous prices that people complain about here.
An 8 oz. package of Tilamook sliced cheddar was $2 last week. Fresh broccoli $1.38 for a large bunch. A 2.25 lb. package of Just Bare boneless skinless chicken breasts (4 large breasts) was $8.99.

(997 posts)There's a "Five Guys" right here in Schaumburg, so I looked it up online. A cheeseburger runs $11.69, bacon cheeseburger $13.59. So the total here would likely be about the same. I would consider Five Guys kind of high-end when it comes to burger joints; most places would run less. Okay, it sounds crazy expensive, but it isn't the restaurant's fault. Quality ground beef is quite expensive. Their food costs must be crazy.

So they really are hitting it out of the park. Raise quality when other fast food pizzas are cutting corners. Then, eat market share but undercutting competitors on what is already a high margin item.
Volume and shanking competition over enshitification. We need more companies competing like that .

In 2023, eight D editors spent a month ordering from more than 50 local pizzerias to find the city's best in every style. To ensure fairness, we arrived unannounced and paid for every pie ourselves, accepting not one free slice. We've now updated that list with all the best newcomers to open in the years since, as well as making quality-control checks to our established favorites, because we're greedy and we like pizza. You can search our findings by style or neighborhood, and look out for the badges that mark special awards for the best takeout, most creative toppings, and the overall Top Six that we feel are the Dallas area's very best examples of pizza-making craft. (Why Top Six instead of five? We couldn't narrow it down.)

From the outside, youd never guess that this place earned a reputation as one of the best Italian restaurants in San Francisco. The pandemic forced Stefania and Walter Gambaccini to move their renowned restaurant from its picturesque North Beach location to essentially the opposite, a generic strip-mall storefront in Frisco. But do not be deceived. Stefanias memorable pies defy both expectation and gravity. The Contadina is more complex than sweet, the pears complemented by the earthy depths of Gorgonzola. Suddenly driving north of Sam Rayburn feels like a pilgrimage, not a chore.

New Haven, Connecticut, is home to Yale and a distinctive style of pizza, often topped with clams and butter. Fortunate Sons leadership team didnt attend Yale, thank goodness. They did one better by flying northeast and spending a week in the citys pizzerias, absorbing all the different kitchens secrets. The dough at Fortunate Son is a hybrid of the versions offered at New Havens most historic spots, and its big enough to feed a hungry family. This is part of a charming transformation for Garlands downtown square. If theres a lineand there often isyou can enjoy the park while you wait.

Naples-born pizzaiolo Dino Santonicolas oven produces some of the best, most consistent Neapolitan pies in the country, as recognized by a board of Italian expert judges. Flavorful crusts come topped with sausage from Jimmys, Calabrian peppers, smoked mozzarella, and other premium ingredients. The Montanara, with a flash-fried crust, is a house specialty. This is downtown Dallas best pizza by far, and the second location in Richardson brings that same quality to the suburbs. The kitchen uses the same dough base to create the loaves for sandwiches, including the thrilling, spicy, bit-of-everything Super Jeff.

You think your local Kroger or Publix packages the ground beef at the store, guess again. The beef likely comes from these meat packing plants which now has a shortage of workers. Thanks Donnie.

What you were charged doesn't seem out of line with what Five Guys has been charging for a while. Their prices jumped significantly back in 2022 -- outpacing inflation which was quite high as you will recall.

And I'm sure you don't want people reminding everyone that Trump and his MAGA Republicans are in complete control of the federal government and most state governments, yet prices are even worse today -- and expected to get much worse as Trump's tariff wars continue.

(46,140 posts)I agree that the increases in food costs during Bidens presidency werent his fault and that his policies were what brought prices back under control. I have no problem screaming that from the rooftops. I also agree that Trumps policies especially his tariff policies are inflationary. And I have no problem with screaming that from the rooftops.
But its important to use the right examples and the cost of a meal at Five Guys which doesnt appear to have materially increased based on some of the posts in the thread may not be the best example.

(60,182 posts)Here on Cape Cod, fish and veggies are as fresh as can be, and my wife is a master chef. We have a lot of visitors, so we usually cook for four. A fancy meal with salad, fresh corn cobs, sautéed potatoes and onions, the fish main course, and some kind of pastry dessert my wife dreams up on the spot ends up costing maybe as much as $30 for the four of us, if you include the salad dressing, spices, butter for the corn. The same thing in a decent Cape restaurant would probably run $170 or more including a 20% tip. We have to buy the ingredients, of course, but the fish markets and farmers roadside stands are everywhere, so we just stop off on the way back from Long Nook Beach.
Its really a two-tier dining system here. Either you do it yourself and pay attention to the food budget, or you say what the hell, Im on vacation, and leave a couple thousand to cover your restaurant adventures if youre here for a few weeks, which we are. Since my wife is a gourmet chef and has fun cooking, we usually opt for the cheap solution. Not everyone does (and not everyone can). Since red meat is on my taboo list, I only have one burger a year, anyway. Its at a place called Local 186 on Commercial Street in Provincetown. Its called The Bird because its all ground turkey meat with sautéed mushrooms, sautéed onions, cheese optional, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and the optional k&m. Its about $18 plus tax and tip, so figure $25 out of pocket. Its really good, and we dont regret the money once a summer, but we dont need it every night.
I grew up on the Cape and I desperately miss fresh seafood. Not a whole lot of reasonably priced, convenient fish markets in western NOVA. My favorite place in Hyannis was Baxters. Wed order at the takeout shed where everything was fresh, custom cooked, and remarkably cheap. Then wed carry our food to a table on the old dockside boat to eat, enjoy the breeze, and watch the seagulls. Baxters has since gone upscale and the old boat has been replaced by private vessels. Mildreds Chowder House in Hyannis was another favorite with both locals and tourists. I always ordered the steamers (steamed clams). Sadly, Mildreds was torn down a long time ago. In any case, great childhood memories from a much simpler time.

(13,985 posts)The secrets are the bun (needs to be high quality and toasted on the inside, not both sides) and the handling of the burger. Smash burgers have more tasty browning due to more surface area per unit volume. Thick burgers are juicier. I got a lot of advice from YouTube, specifically Adam Ragusea for a lot of it.
Both smashburgers and thick burgers benefit from very low "squishing" the burger around. Buy crumbly, freshly ground beef, not prepressed patties or tightly compacted packages.
For smash burgers, ball up the burger beforehand with almost no kneading. Smash it as few times as possible on the griddle and then leave it alone. If you keep smashing it, it will toughen.
Thick burgers need an absolute minimum of handling to get them into shape. Don't press them in a form or buy them prepressed.
I cook thick burgers on the grill from frozen. They end up great.
To cook smashburgers, I thaw out pre-frozen thick burgers (I store both as frozen thick burgers in the freezer) in the microwave. Then smash them on a preheated, carbon steel pan. They end up great.
Add MSG (Accent) for a perceived flavor boost.
Deep fried fries right after cutting them are just fine imo. I don't bother soaking or blanching and I think they end up comparable to Five Guys.
Always interested in burger tips, btw!

We split it all. I had a $12.00 Sauvignon Blanc, Kendall Jackson. We had enough burger and pasta for two more meals. The burger was $20 with pasta. $84 plus a $25 tip for delightful service. 84÷12=7. Nice restaurant experience.
Tonight, I am making a Blanquette de poulet as veau is too pricey. Boneless chicken wings on sale at $2.69/lb. 2.5 lbs. Six, maybe eight meals.
We split when we go out and beat restaurant fare quite often in our own kitchen. We live Nora Ephron's philosophy that if you are not thinking about your next meal, you are not living.
