UN experts: "Israel is exterminating the people of Gaza by any and all means." (Press Release)

Gaza: “Never again” giving way to endless decimation of displaced Palestinians, warn UN experts
07 August 2025

GENEVA – A group of UN experts* today decried Israel’s escalation of its genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people in Gaza, while calling on the international community to end its complicity in the face of Israeli atrocities as ceasefire talks continue without progress.

“Displacement orders from the Israeli authorities have targeted the last vestiges of the international humanitarian response in Gaza, as have direct attacks like the recent deadly airstrike on the Palestine Red Crescent Society,” the experts said.

“This comes as the people of Gaza – above all, children – are dying en masse of starvation coupled with a lack of access to food, water, healthcare and shelter,” they said. “So-called ‘humanitarian pauses’ and airdrops are insufficient to address a crisis of this scale. Unrestricted and uninterrupted humanitarian assistance must be allowed into Gaza.”

The experts stressed that Israel’s illegal restrictions on humanitarian aid have inflicted conditions of life on the people of Gaza that are currently bringing about their physical destruction. They recalled this constitutes an act punishable under international law as genocide, as does the mass killing and maiming of Palestinians in Gaza.

“Israel is exterminating the people of Gaza by any and all means,” the experts said. “Over a thousand Palestinians have been slaughtered by Israeli forces as they line up for humanitarian assistance.”

Seventy per cent of these killings have taken place at sites established by the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, backed by the United States and Israel. These deaths add to the more than 59,000 Palestinians killed and 140,000 injured during Israel’s indiscriminate assault on Gaza.

The experts warned that displacement orders have confined Gaza’s entire surviving population to a mere 12 per cent of the Strip’s territory.

“Israeli proposals to further forcibly transfer Gaza’s population to a so-called ‘humanitarian city’ on the border with Egypt can only be seen as an attempt to create a concentration camp with conditions so dire that Gazans will ultimately be forced from their homeland,” they said.

The experts urged the international community to take long-overdue measures to protect Palestinians and hold Israel accountable.

“Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people is enabled by the complicity of States that continue to shield Israel from the political and diplomatic consequences of its actions – choosing instead to suppress the free speech of their own citizens who speak out against these horrendous crimes while continuing to provide Israel with arms, trade, and economic assistance,” they said.

“Furthermore, the United Nations has yet to definitively refer to the situation in Gaza as a genocide, despite irrefutable evidence of Israel committing multiple prohibited acts under the Genocide Convention and public statements from Israel’s leadership calling for the continued starvation of Gaza,” the experts said.

They also noted that the European Union has failed to adopt any measures to sanction Israel for breaching its human rights obligations under the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

“Without urgent international action, the words ‘never again’ will refer not to the prevention of genocide, but to the existence of Palestinian life in Gaza,” the experts said.

*The experts:

Paula Gaviria Betancur, Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons
George Katrougalos, Independent expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order
Michael Fakhri, Special Rapporteur on the right to food
Pedro Arrojo-Agudo, Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation
Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967

and listing the corporations that were financially invested in it and profiting from it. So have any of the EU countries that invested pension funds in Israeli companies making weapons of mass destruction withdrawn those funds yet. Didn't think so . Such hypocrisy. So what if her husband was an economic advisor to the PLO? SO WHAT?

And you're so full of it with your bs that "as of May 1, Francesca Albanese is no longer associated with the U.N." Albanese was confirmed for another three years in April 2025 and in June 2025, the UN published her report that the Gaza genocide was continuing because it is lucrative for several business corporations. "The report lists 48 corporations, including Microsoft, Alphabet Inc. and Amazon, which it says are helping Israel displace Palestinians in breach of international law".

Oh! She attacked holy corporate cows complicit in genocide so of course let's demonize and lie about her.

Trump and his ambassador denounced her? A sure sign that she is accurate with her findings.

Trump, Rubio, Netanyahu talking points posted at DU. Reprehensible. But you are funny with that bit about "as of May 1", you should inform Trump's buddies at the very right wing FDD who were still screaming their heads off on July 3 that she needs to be fired.

Aug 2025
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN Human Rights) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote and protect the enjoyment and full realization, by all people, of all human rights. The Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and international human rights laws and treaties established those rights.

UN Human Rights was created by the General Assembly in 1993 through its resolution 48/141 which also details its mandate.

UN Human Rights is mandated:

- Promote and protect all human rights for all
- Recommend that bodies of the UN system improve the promotion and protection of all human rights
- Promote and protect the right to development
- Provide technical assistance to States for human rights activities
- Coordinate UN human rights education and public information programmes
- Work actively to remove obstacles to the realization of human rights and to prevent the continuation of human rights violations
- Engage in dialogue with Governments in order to secure respect for all human rights
- Enhance international cooperation for the promotion and protection of all human rights
- Coordinate human rights promotion and protection activities throughout the United Nations system
- Rationalize, adapt, strengthen and streamline the UN human rights machinery

That is false:

https://www.ohchr.org/en/statements/2025/08/us-sanctions-special-rapporteur-francesca-albanese-threaten-human-rights-system

GENEVA – UN human rights experts* today expressed their continued support for human rights principles and fundamental standards that underpin international human rights and humanitarian law and condemned the United States’ decision to impose sanctions on the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese. They issued the following statement:

“Echoing the statement issued by the Coordination Committee of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council on 10 July 2025, we unconditionally denounce the United States' decision to impose sanctions on the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) and reaffirm our commitment to defending fundamental human rights principles against efforts to undermine them and intimidate or silence those working to defend them. We express our full solidarity with Francesca Albanese, whose mandate and reporting are essential to upholding international legal standards and accountability.

The Special Rapporteur's work represents a principled commitment to a human rights mandate, providing rigorous, independent analysis of grave violations of human rights and humanitarian law in the occupied Palestinian territories, including forcible transfer, systemic discrimination and a wide range of international crimes, several of them targeting or particularly affecting women and children. In fulfilling this responsibility, Albanese has come under significant pressure, underscoring the importance of safeguarding impartial and evidence-based human rights reporting. This mandate plays an essential role in documenting structural injustice and advancing accountability under international law—an endeavour that must be upheld and protected.

Sanctioning the Special Rapporteur for fulfilling this responsibility, which is mandated by the Human Rights Council, is a direct attack on the integrity of the UN human rights system. These measures violate international law, including the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations. The 1946 Convention accords UN experts such privileges and immunities as are necessary for the independent exercise of their functions. Violating this framework sends a dangerous message, threatens the independence of the Special Procedures system and has a chilling effect on global human rights advocacy. States that disagree with the views of UN experts should constructively engage with them through established processes of diplomatic dialogue.

The targeting of the Special Rapporteur cannot be separated from the egregious international crimes and human rights abuses being perpetrated against Palestinians and the longstanding efforts to delegitimise those who defend their rights. The prejudice and threats faced by human rights defenders – whether they are scholars, civil society actors, UN officials or experts – reflect a broader strategy of silencing dissent and shielding abusive power structures from scrutiny. We call on all States to expressly condemn these sanctions and refuse to cooperate in carrying them out and reaffirm their commitment to the UN Special Rapporteurs, Working Groups and Independent Experts, including the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.”

Is any criticism of Israel permissible? Serious question. If the survival of Israel is an imperative, because the existence of Israel as a safe home for Jewish people is non- negotiable given the long history persecution, pogroms and mass murder, and if any criticism of Israel threatens that, then no criticism of Israel could be permitted. If that is your position, then why not say so and defend that position?

Is there any limit to what Israel can do against the Palestinians? What would be "too far" in your view?

Is any and all criticism of Israel ipso facto antisemitic? What sort of criticism of Israel would be OK in your opinion?

Special Rapporteur on Torture warns cruelty is becoming the enemy of peace in Gaza, and calls for release of hostages

GENEVA - The Special Rapporteur on torture, Alice Jill Edwards, repeats her urgent calls for the unconditional and immediate release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, after videos and photographs of emaciated hostages were released over the weekend.

“Cruelty is being used as psychological warfare, with devastating consequences for individuals, families, societies and for peace,” said the expert. “This war more than most is also being fought in the public arena of the media with images of suffering hitting our screens every day,” she said.

“Today I am reminding not only Hamas and other armed groups, but also anyone who is harbouring the hostages, that aiding and abetting hostage-taking is an international crime,” the expert said. “Anyone involved must be held to account for their involvement in a court of law.”

“I further appeal to all States with influence to help break the stalemate over ceasefire negotiations, for international observers to be given immediate access to every person who is being held hostage or detained, and for the parties to this awful conflict to put down their arms and negotiate, once and for all, a comprehensive peace settlement”, Edwards said.

-In Janurary 2025, Albanese connected the wildfires in LA to Israel’s war in Gaza tweeting: “On our small planet, all injustices are connected.”

-In February 2024, in response to French President Emmanuel Macron referring to the October 7 massacre as “the largest antisemitic massacre of our century,” Albanese tweeted: “The greatest antisemitic massacre of our century? No, @EmmanuelMacron. The victims of 7/10 were not killed because of their Judaism but in response to Israel’s oppression.” For this statement, the governments of France and Germany condemned Albanese for her antisemitism, making it the first time in UN history that both France and Germany condemn a UN rapporteur for antisemitism

-On October 7 2023, the day that Hamas targeted Israel’s civilian populations massacring of over 1,200 people and kidnapping 250, Albanese’s reaction was to minimize Hamas’ atrocities stating that, “Today’s violence must be put in context.”

-In 2014, Albanese expressed excitement on Facebook that Hamas was removed from the list of terror organizations by the EU General Court: “Two good news one after another from the radio while I was taking a nap. Normalization in the relations usa cuba [sic] and removal of hamas [sic] from the list of terror organizations. Was i [sic] dreaming???” The EU’s decision to declassify Hamas as a terrorist organization was overturned by the European Court of Justice (EJC) in 2017

If Israel were a Christian or Hindu nation, with the same history of ethnic cleansing and Occupation, brutality and oppression of Palestinians, Oct. 7th would still have happened.

It is not who the people of Israel are, it is what they have done to Palestinians.

That this simple, obvious fact is deliberately, repeatedly misrepresented is key to decoding and understanding all of Israel's false narratives. Also how Israel evades accountability and can act with the impunity rightly denied to other rogue states.

And Chris Hedges is right too. Lots of money to be made in war and genocide.

Money in occupation and apartheid too. Corporations are raking in the dough from Palestinian oppression and genocide. See Ms Albanese's report on that very subject!

The Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council are independent human rights experts with mandates to report and advise on human rights from a thematic or country-specific perspective. The system of Special Procedures is a central element of the United Nations human rights machinery and covers all human rights: civil, cultural, economic, political, and social.

In the context of the 2011 review of its work and functioning, the Human Rights Council:

reaffirmed the obligation of States to cooperate with the Special Procedures,
reiterated the integrity and independence of Special Procedures,
reaffirmed the principles of cooperation, transparency and accountability and the role of the system of Special Procedures in enhancing the capacity of the Human Rights Council to address human rights situations.
Member States confirmed their strong opposition to reprisals against persons cooperating with the United Nations and its human rights mechanism and representatives.

The Council further recognized the importance of ensuring transparent, adequate and equitable funding to support all Special Procedures according to their specific needs (see HRC resolution 16/21).

US reiterates opposition to ‘unfit’ UN Palestinian rapporteur Francesca Albanese

The US reiterates its opposition to UN special rapporteur for the Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese as she arrives in New York for a series of engagements.

“I want to reiterate the US belief she is unfit for her role,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield tweets of Albanese, who has faced repeated accusations of having made antisemitic statements in her criticism of Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians.

The Biden administration has stopped short of publicly calling for her removal but has sharpened its tone against Albanese in recent months, with several senior officials publicly calling her unfit and rejecting her mandate altogether.

The United Nations should not tolerate antisemitism from a UN-affiliated official hired to promote human rights,” Thomas-Greenfield tweets.

The US says it pushed retraction of a famine warning for north Gaza. Aid groups express concern

By ELLEN KNICKMEYER
Updated 8:32 PM CST, December 26, 2024

WASHINGTON (AP) — A lead organization monitoring for food crises around the world withdrew a new report this week warning of imminent famine in north Gaza under what it called Israel’s “near-total blockade,” after the U.S. asked for its retraction, U.S. officials told The Associated Press. The move follows public criticism of the report from the U.S. ambassador to Israel.

The rare public challenge from the Biden administration of the work of the U.S.-funded Famine Early Warning System, which is meant to reflect the data-driven analysis of unbiased experts, drew accusations from aid and human-rights figures of possible U.S. political interference. A finding of famine would be a rebuke of close U.S. ally Israel, which has insisted that its 15-month war in Gaza is aimed against the Hamas militant group and not against its civilian population.

-snip-

In challenging the findings publicly, the U.S. ambassador “leveraged his political power to undermine the work of this expert agency,” said Scott Paul, a senior manager at the Oxfam America humanitarian nonprofit. Paul stressed that he was not weighing in on the accuracy of the data or methodology of the report.

“The whole point of creating FEWS is to have a group of experts make assessments about imminent famine that are untainted by political considerations,” said Kenneth Roth, former executive director of Human Rights Watch and now a visiting professor in international affairs at Princeton University. “It sure looks like USAID is allowing political considerations -- the Biden administration’s worry about funding Israel’s starvation strategy -- to interfere.”

For Kenneth Roth to make that statement, it had to be bad. Biden made a terrible mistake. People, especially my generation, were paying very close attention to how he handled Gaza. Things like that were tremendous mistakes that cost us many votes- more votes than some people here care to admit.

Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967

-October 2024, Albanese retweeted with the caption “A must-read for the ages...” a tweet from Chris Hedges that read: “I fear, given that the Israel lobby has bought and paid for Congress and the two ruling parties, as well as cowed the media and universities, the rivers of blood will continue to swell. There is money to be made in war. A lot of it. And the influence of the war industry, buttressed by hundreds of millions of dollars spent on political campaigns by the Zionists, will be a formidable barrier to peace, not to mention sanity.”

The saying that Palestinians had no other recourse than violence and denying that the October 7th attacks had any root in antisemitism for example. Hamas has learned to moderate some of their overt antisemitic language, but I've seen nothing that indicates they've changed substantively.

But I also disagree with the ADL on many of those statements being bad. This for example is just not a problematic statement to me.

In December 2023, Albanese compared the Israel’s war in Gaza to the Holocaust saying: “Fellow Europeans, Italians, Germans: after the Holocaust, we should instinctively know that Genocide starts with dehumanizing the Other. If Israel's current attack agst [sic] Palestinians doesnt [sic] prompt our strong reaction, the darkest page of our recent history has taught us nothing.”

I do always like to see the source material of controversial statements to make sure I have the context. Thanks for sharing it.

There are a number of people on this site that seem to believe that any criticism of Israel is de facto anti-semitism and seem very comfortable with treating all Palestinians as untermenschen.

Israel is committing genocide. The attacks on October 7, 2024 were indeed horrible. But the Israeli IDF and the ultra rightwing Likud coalition are mercilessly pursuing genocide against any Palestinian in Gaza. The goal is clearly the extermination of all Gazans.

The ad hominem attacks on this site for anyone that believes Israel needs to stop the indiscriminate killing disgust me.

I believe this woman is telling a very uncomfortable truth. The Israeli government is behaving like Nazis. Anyone that has a moral bone in their body should be actively condemning Israel.

Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people is enabled by the complicity of States that continue to shield Israel from the political and diplomatic consequences of its actions – choosing instead to suppress the free speech of their own citizens who speak out against these horrendous crimes while continuing to provide Israel with arms, trade, and economic assistance,” they said.

This is making people all over the world lose faith and trust. The centre is not holding, international norms and laws are being undermined and the UN and states are paralyzed. Palestinians are being sacrificed on the altar of... what? Money, greed, fear, guilt, racism, hatred?? Geopolitics and western "civilization"?? If this is civilization, no thanks.
