This discussion thread was locked by EarlG (a host of the General Discussion forum).
list is longer than it has ever been. I try not to block, but when people are being performatively obtuse I don't have the time for them.
What are your reasons for blocking?
I wonder if some of them are AI trolls?

(25,507 posts)but I have been tempted over the past couple of weeks I'll admit. Disagreement doesn't bother me, but I don't like being talked down to or patronized. I don't like it when someone rudely points out something that I already posted in my OP as if I don't know it. But I am pretty good at ignoring so that's what I usually do.

(32,764 posts)If posters only address issues I am fine with people who vigorously disagree with my opinions.
If people get personal, I want everyone to see it.

(3,110 posts)There are people here these days who seem to be here specifically to troll and start anti-Democrat/Democratic sentiment.

(24,067 posts)Before the 2024 election, I had less than 10 people on ignore (and Ive been at DU almost 21 years); since the election, my ignore list has grown to nearly 100 people.
Most of those Ive put on ignore are 2024 election deniers, or others who dont appear to be part of the reality-based community.
Intractable
(2,390 posts)Excessive grammatical errors, not breaking into paragraphs, constant profanity, and dumb ideas are why I put people on ignore.

(131,220 posts)There are a few whose posts are unreadable because of typos, no capitalization and weird punctuation (come on, folks, a little proofreading and spell-checking isn't too much to ask, is it?), and a few others whose posts are always about the same thing, beating the same dead horses. I don't read them, I just pass them by when I see them.

(55,525 posts)forced off of DU for being a tag team and targeted DUers with an opinion opposed to their own. They pissed everyone off and finally they were forced off of this site.
They were very obnoxious and mean spirited. If you didn't agree with them they attacked you. Some threads were over 200 replies long. They loved causing hatred through bullying tactics and were finally suspended from DU permanently.
Their "pro Garland" agenda was their driving force. Whenever anyone disagreed they attacked with knives. I was so glad when they ere suspended a few years ago.

(23,802 posts)putting words in my mouth is the thing that immediately causes me to block people.
If I say "I think X...."
and someone comes back with "Oh, then you must also support Y & Z"
That's STRAIGHT on the block list. because that person is here only to antagonize, and i'm not providing them entertainment.

(19,873 posts)most of them had been tombstoned in the meantime....a few I'm contemplating ignoring again.

(17,749 posts)I need to look, but I think the only ones I've had on ignore were the scandalous ones from years ago where one person was posting as two people and causing a bunch of problems. They were kicked off so I doubt that even shows up any more.
I also don't alert unless it's something really, really bad. I think in over 20 years here, I may have alerted on two or three posts max.

(8,938 posts)Im willing to listen to anothers point of view. I dont even mind a little snark in response to my posts, but insults, hostility, mockery and arrogance? Nope, thats not something I must tolerate here or anywhere else. Similarly, if I see a post thats alert worthy, its also ignore worthy.
And yes, my ignore list has grown just today as a matter of fact.
I expect the same from others. If Im not your cup of tea, ignore me. Its a win/win.

(8,856 posts)and wouldn't know how to go about using them. Tantamount to blinders, imo. However I have 'ignored' that which I don't wish to respond to.
Online, as in real life, I've always had a dim view of cliques, pile-ons, and bullies. A very dim view.
I'll offer my two cents on a subject, and if there's a difference of opinion, no problemo (s'long as it doesn't get personal).
Agreement isn't mandatory.

(79,250 posts)There are a few people I don't particularly like and rarely, if ever, agree with on anything. And every so often, there is someone I suspect is not here in support of our party. I think that there were more "trolls" in the CHENEY/bush administration era.

(22,117 posts)Let's say something extremely important happens, and they post it in LBN. You won't see the thread. So hypothetically, let's say you have user so-and-so on ignore. Sonia Sotomayor announces she's retiring, and so-and-so posts it in LBN. You won't get to see that hyper-important thread.
And to those who put me on ignore, you will miss my beautiful Senate predictions list every two years.

(10,856 posts)In the beginning I blocked a few, but it turned out they would shortly be tombstoned anyway. So when I see something truly obnoxious or obvious trolling I just ignore it and let their post sink to the bottom.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
