Solomon Pena, a former Republican candidate, was sentenced to 80 years for orchestrating a series of drive-by shootings

On August 13, 2025, Solomon Peña, a former Republican candidate for New Mexico’s House District 14, was sentenced to 80 years in federal prison for orchestrating a series of drive-by shootings targeting the homes of Democratic officials in Albuquerque. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Kea W. Riggs, includes three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and restitution. Peña’s actions followed his significant election loss in November 2022, which he falsely claimed was rigged.

Prosecutors described Peña’s actions as an attack on democracy, driven by a desire to intimidate officials with opposing views. While awaiting trial, Peña attempted to have his co-conspirators killed to silence them, leading to additional charges. His defense team, maintaining his innocence, requested a five-year sentence, arguing reliance on the Trujillos’ plea-deal testimony. Prosecutors sought 90 years, citing Peña’s lack of remorse and the need to deter political violence.
