(114,683 posts)Israelis (many) are as angry as I am to see what Netanyahu has done to Israel's reputation--years after their righteous response to October 7 turned into something decidedly NOT. They don't deny what is being done in their name and certainly don't defend it. Only Netanyahu's far right-wing extremists do (and sadly some of his deniers--including some number in the US).

Israel limits entry of baby formula in Gaza as infants die of hunger
While waiting to enter Gaza on a medical aid mission, an American doctor watched Israeli security forces confiscate the cans of powdered baby formula packed in his luggage. The vital product is desperately lacking in the Palestinian enclave, where about 50 children have died of hunger since March.

By Laure Stephan (Beirut, Lebanon correspondent)
Published on July 1, 2025, at 11:30 am (Paris)
At the end of June, an American doctor was preparing to travel to Gaza for a medical mission. His suitcases were filled with cans of baby formula, gauze, bandages and sanitary pads. He believed he was doing the right thing: The Palestinian population of the enclave, bombarded and starved by the Israeli army, lacks everything. While in Amman, a mandatory gathering point for foreign medical missions heading to Gaza, the coordinator of the convoy, Palestinian-German ophthalmic surgeon Diana Nazzal urged him to lighten his load. "If you only have medical supplies and no personal belongings, you risk being turned away, or even jeopardizing the whole mission," she explained.
The American doctor followed her instructions, reducing the baby formula in his luggage to three cans. Once at the Allenby Bridge crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, however, his personal belongings were searched by Israeli security guards manning the terminal on the Palestinian side.
"The baby formula was confiscated," said Nazzal. "What other explanation is there, if it's not that hunger is being used as a weapon of war in the ongoing genocide in Gaza?" Local health workers said baby formula is desperately lacking in the enclave, especially specialized formula for premature babies or lactose-free formula for babies with intolerances. Many mothers, suffering from malnutrition, are unable to breastfeed.
'Severe malnutrition'
COGAT, the branch of the Israeli army that coordinates the entry of humanitarian aid, told the Associated Press that more than 1,000 metric tons of baby food, including infant formula, have been delivered to Gaza since May 19, when Israeli authorities very slightly eased the complete humanitarian blockade imposed on the coastal territory for two and a half months.

(21,129 posts)What makes you think that Hamas leaders had "no effective weapons"? Not only did Haniyeh threaten Israel; he also threatened Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
========================================
Ismail Haniyeh was a fat, pink, and polished multi-millionaire terrorist leader who lived a life of luxury in Qatar. He was the guy selected to be prime minister in 2006 when the last elections were held and Hamas took over Gaza. He was also the public face and spokesman for Hamas, post October 3. He was having a visit with the Ayatollah in a palace in Iran when he was killed.
--------------------------------------------------------
Nov 23 (Reuters) - Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader based in Qatar, has been the tough-talking face of the Palestinian group's international diplomacy as war has raged back in Gaza where his family home was destroyed in an Israeli air strike in November.
Appointed to the militant group's top job in 2017, he has moved between Turkey and Qatar's capital Doha, escaping the travel restrictions of the blockaded Gaza Strip and enabling him to act as a negotiator in the latest ceasefire deal or talk to Hamas' main ally Iran.

(67,393 posts)And I mean "compelling" as in "compelling evidence." He was thumping his chest with the kind of empty invective we've seen many times before. Why do you choose to believe this frothing pronouncement while also dismissing any statement from within Gaza that doesn't support your narrative?
Bibi's apologists tend to define "human shields" as "any Palestinian civilian who exists while any member of Hamas exists." That is, the "human shields" bullshit is used to justify thousands upon thousands upon thousands upon thousands of civilian murders by Bibi's regime, and as long as IDF claims that someone from Hamas was reported in the area; then the civilians that Bibi murdered were being used as shields.
At the end of the day, there are really only two positions here: either you're fine with genocidal civilian murder on a massive scale, or you are not.
Which side do you suppose history will favor?

(21,129 posts)There is only one entity that holds the power to IMMEDIATELY and UNILATERALLY end the war they started: HAMAS.

Hamas has agency. It needs to do what even the Arab League called on it to do 10 days ago: release the hostages, disarm, and surrender.
Orrex
(67,393 posts)How many tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians does Netanyahu get to murder before his tireless apologists cry foul?
Im guessing, from all available information, that no such figure exists.
Hamas is a vile terrorist regime that should be wiped out to its last member. Meanwhile Netanyahu is bombing hospitals and is starving children.
The nation of Israel has forfeited any moral authority that it might once have claimed, and Bibi's apologists can be dismissed as advocates for genocide.

(67,393 posts)Hamas has no power nor reach to commit genocide, though Hamas is indeed a vile terrorist regime. Meanwhile Netanyahu is murdering innocent civilians by the thousands while his apologists cheer him on.
Israel is an ally that we fund extremely generously, while Netanyahu is actively committing genocide in real time. One would think that we'd hold our very well-funded ally to a higher standard than a shitbag terrorist sect, but here we are.
For whatever reason, certain parties are all-in on genocide, as long as the "right people" are exterminated.

(67,393 posts)You assert (without evidence or rhetorical support) that Hamas has agency in this.
You would meanwhile have us believe that Israel, with the most advanced and well-funded military in the region, is somehow powerless to act in the face of this mysterious foe. We've heard that rhetoric for many decades.
You are advocating--with conspicuous vigor--for the continued slaughter of innocent Palestinian civilians, and here is the essence of your argument as you've presented it:
Again, I wonder how history will view Israel's actions in this.

No, the argument is between your view that the slaughter of innocent Palestinians is fine and the civilized world's view that Netanyahu is committing genocide.
You asserted that Hamas has agency, specifically the power to end Netanyahu's years-long campaign of deliberate civilian murder. So if you're now wheedling out of it by claiming that simply meant that Hamas has the ability to exert power, then you are guilty of profound intellectual dishonesty.
On top of advocating for the continued slaughter of innocent Palestinians, of course.

- Hamas leader Haniyeh (who lived in the lap of luxury in Qatar) said on the record that "Hamas needs the blood of women, children, and the elderly of Gaza

(2,077 posts)Even ignoring that Israel's continued expansion of settlements is evidence that the previous ceasefire wasn't actually a status of peace (and likewise given Hamas is still committed to the destruction of Israel, they weren't really at peace either, just rearming) the Netanyahu government has 5 key objectives.
The return of all 50 hostages, 20 of whom are believed to still be alive.
The disarming of Hamas.
Israeli security control over the enclave.
The demilitarization of Gaza.
The establishment of an alternative civilian administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.
Only 2 of those are fully up to Hamas. And given the anger of a majority of the Israeli public that supports removing Palestinians from Gaza entirely, there's no reason to believe even if Hamas returned all hostages and dispersed to other countries or turned themselves in to some justice system, whether Israeli or ICC, that the intentional starvation and such would end. Likewise there's no reason to believe that if Hamas did that they wouldn't immediately start thinking of ways to go right back to their terrorist ways. History is a guide and neither side is innocent of continuing efforts to gain power over the other.

Its in the context of that reality that makes what is happening in Gaza all the more painful.
People that should have empathy and understanding towards a group of people without land of their own that are attacked and slandered by others seem to have none at all.
This is a problem far older than us and nothing is simple as talking about it on a message board but both Hamas and Israeli government has had lots of opportunities to repair things and neither party was willing to do that and for 17+ years the Palestinian people as well as many others, have suffered because of those choices.
