So Gavin Newsom Said That Democrats In Other States Should Be Doing More

I can't say that or I will be criticized.

Newsom said that Blue states need to do what California is doing, fighting fire with fire, gerrymandering to the max.

Project 2025 is ahead of schedule, it's not business as usual in politics.

Bullies only respond to people standing up to them.

Blow the Magats out of the water.

I guarantee that Magats are coordinating their gerrymandering, who is coordinating Democrats'?

to act. Newsom should continue the "you do it, we do it" stance down to the wire, and then do it regardless. So should the other blue states. Wait till the last minute and then enact it. The right will squawk, but who cares? Just say "they threatened it and we had to act".

Stop pretending they're ever going to return to good faith governance. They won't. Ever. When they pretend to is the time to keep hitting them harder and harder. Never let up. Their descendants will thank us one day, after we liberate them from their repulsive Jesus cult.

Newsom wants the voters to approve redistricting before the legislature acts, so it would be December at the earliest before anything could be finalized. Not sure when the 2026 California primaries are- they’re usually in June, IIRC, so that would leave at most 6 months to campaign for the new seats. Not sure what the filing deadlines for the primaries are.

Most red states are already highly jerrymandered.

I never thought I would believe this, but maybe it really is time for blue states to jerrymander as much as the red states have already been doing.

We haven't had truly representative government for a while now; maybe this would help.

But, obviously, you and I are not alone now that Newsom has made the comment. Good for him.

And good for him for one MORE thing, too. I LOVE the way he's trolling Trump. Because it will bother the asshole and get under his skin. I think it's great. And guess what????

Newsom figured that out all by himself. *I* didn't have to figure it out for him. Amazing!!!!

Gerrymandering California requires winning a state wide referendum. California is big and there are lots of Trumpers, Magats, and other nihilists who will do their best to block it. Winning will take money and feet’s in the streets. We’re on.

New York and Illinois.

The other states under Dem control already have all Dem, or nearly all Dem (with just 1 or 2 republican reps) delegations.

There are far more red states with 4-8 Dem reps, where redistricting could flip more seats, although, as has been reported, in Texas it might not work out exactly as hoped for, flipping fewer seats, and actually making some formerly solid republican seats more competitive.

NY can’t possibly change their lines in time for 2026 and IL doesn’t have much left to give. They’re already one of the most heavily gerrymandered states.

They might be able to come up with one more seat - but the 2022 effort already knocked republicans down from five to three seats.

NY can’t make a change that will take effect before the 2028 election.

Worse while we’re on the topic - both states are likely to lose multiple seats after the 2030 census.

15. Some Democratic states face a much harder battle to redistrict
Fri Aug 15, 2025, 01:23 AM
Aug 2025

My Governor, Tim Walz, supports the efforts for states to redistrict and I think he would do it in Minnesota if he could. But in Minnesota its a daunting task with significant legal restrictions in the state constitution, an evenly divided legislature, and the involvement of a state Supreme Court commission. An attempt to revise the Minnesota state constitution would be a long, hard fought process if it could even get started without a Democratic legislative majority. Historically we have a history of fair districting in the state. The political fight to redo all districts into unfair sections would be a massive legal battle. I'm not sure there is anyway to change this until the next census.

While I appreciate Newsom's efforts he shouldn't be critical of other Governors who are in situations that can't be immediately changed.

...a one-off "Dems should do more" comment wouldn't elicit much pushback.

But when all someone does is ignorantly criticize Democrats ON A DEMOCRATIC PARTY-SUPPORTING WEBSITE, often for not doing things that Democrats have already been repeatedly doing, don't be surprised when you rightfully get called out on it.

Oh sure. The postings on a Democratic forum are what has enabled MAGA.

Orrex, some rando with a middling post-count, exerts greater influence over the zeitgeist than elected and well-funded Democrats nationwide. Would that 'twere so!

If this offend anyone, a hit dog will holler...
LOL. Eliciting a response doesn't mean that the dog is wrong or that the attacker is right. The gatekeepers holler every time someone fails to parrot the approved message, for instance.

If those same gatekeepers attacked Republicans with the vigor that they devote to enforcing lockstep conformity...

Let's be clear here: are you actually denying the well-known, reported-on fact that Republicans, Russians, and others have used social media to (successfully) sow discord among the many groups that make up the Democratic coalition and drive wedges between us all to depress Democratic turnout, get more Republicans elected, and hasten their fascist agenda to destroy our country as we know it?

PS - "No single raindrop thinks its responsible for the flood."

PPS - As much as it seems to trigger you, yes, as long as I'm here on this Democratic Party-supporting website, I will continue to call out those that only seem to attack Democrats. Do you support Democrats? If not, why are you here?
