The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has launched a formal investigation into California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, alleging their administrations obstructed federal efforts to restore order following days of violent riots sparked by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid.


The committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., and Subcommittee on Federal Law Enforcement Chairman Clay Higgins, R-La., issued letters to Newsom and Bass on Friday requesting “documents and communications” dating from June 1, 2025, related to the state and city’s handling of the riots. The committee press release accuses both Democrats of minimizing the severity of the violence and “falsely blaming” President Donald Trump for the actions of what it described as “violent rioters.”
