(131,252 posts)I can't imagine that the committee would step on its own dick that hard again. Kissinger got the award jointly with Le Duc Tho for their work in negotiating the Paris Peace Accords which were supposed to end the Vietnam War. Direct American intervention was supposed to end and the remaining U.S. troops were to be withdrawn in exchange for a ceasefire and the end of the conflict. But the agreement was not ratified by the Senate, and fighting restarted before American soldiers even left Vietnam. Additionally, and importantly, South Vietnam had not been consulted on the terms of the agreement, and had not even been informed that negotiations had resumed (doesn't that sound like what Trump and Putin are trying to do to Ukraine? Would the committee give the award to Trump and Putin jointly?). The South Vietnamese government subsequently refused to accept the accords, and both sides regularly violated the ceasefire. Le Duc Tho refused to accept the prize, Kissinger tried to give his back, and two members of the committee resigned in protest.
