WHY?The reason why Putin wants Ukraine and not because he wants to restore it as part of Russia.
The main Russian Black Sea Fleet submarine base is located in Sevastopol, Crimea.
This base is situated within the administrative territory of Sevastopol and includes several bays like Severnaya and Yuzhnaya. The base also has shipyards for repairing and modernizing Russian naval vessels. In addition to Sevastopol, Russia has been reinforcing the Cold War-era submarine base in Balaklava (also in Crimea) and considering establishing a new base in Abkhazia (Georgia).
Notice all the now Russia-occupied areas, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhiaare are a path to Crimea from Russia.
It's always been about that warm-water sub base.
