in the prize's home country. Norway's largest newspaper, Aftenposten, just published an opinion piece stating that the committee would have to be insane to award it to him.
According to the former secretary of the Nobel Committee, Geir Lundestad, Obama received the Peace Prize because he "stood for all the ideals the Nobel Committee had worked hard for over many decades: a better organized world with an emphasis on the UN and multilateral diplomacy, dialogue and negotiations in almost all situations, the vision of a world without nuclear weapons, strengthening democracy and human rights; a new climate policy."
From the first Peace Prize in 1901 until today, the prize has rewarded work for international cooperation, free trade, disarmament and brotherhood between peoples... Trump has abandoned almost all of the ideals mentioned above. He has refused to recognize a democratic election and inspired supporters to commit coups..... [the authors list Trump's various sins against peace and humanity]
Trump has threatened NATO allies, Canada and Denmark. He is against free trade and uses tariffs as a political tool to pressure other countries to impose his will. The international order has largely been replaced by "might is right."...
The Nobel Committee has received an absurd nomination this summer. Accused of genocide, Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated his accomplice, Donald Trump, for the Nobel Peace Prize. A mental breakdown of the committee is needed for Trump to fulfill his dream of being named Prince of Peace.

Once he sees that he will never get the Nobel Peace Prize how long will it be before TACO starts trashing it?

Ocelot II
(131,231 posts)that it's unlikely they'll make a similar mistake again. It was awarded jointly to Kissinger and Lê Đức Thọ for "having negotiated a cease fire in Vietnam in 1973." Thọ declined the prize, and Kissinger later tried to return it, but the committee declined his offer. "In Norway, the Nobel Committee was subject to widespread criticism, with the Norwegian Arbeiderbladet newspaper calling the award a "bad joke" and stating, "The Norwegian Nobel Committee has disgraced itself". In a joint letter to the Norwegian Parliament, multiple Harvard professors wrote that awarding Kissinger and Thọ was "more than a person with a normal sense of justice can take". For only the second time in history, Norwegian Nobel Committee members resigned as a result of the decision." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_Nobel_Peace_Prize
Awarding the prize to Trump would be exponentially worse, and the current committee surely knows it.

(4,161 posts)Pretty bad choice from any vantage point.
Ocelot II
(131,231 posts)it was because the basis for the award, the Paris Peace Accords, was a sham. The deal was negotiated by Kissinger, who was then the NSA, and Lê Đức Thọ, representing North Vietnam. The government of South Vietnam wasn't represented or even informed, and of course they didn't know what was being discussed or agreed to because the negotiations were held in secret. Nguyễn Văn Thiệu, the president of South Vietnam, refused to agree to the draft agreement when presented with it, but later, after Nixon threatened to abandon South Vietnam if it didn't go along with the deal, Thiệu had little choice but to take it. The agreement mostly got the US out of Vietnam but the North and South kept on fighting and the war continued for another two years until North Vietnam's forces overtook the South, the US having refused to offer any more support by providing equipment and weapons. Saigon fell in 1975 and remaining US personnel were evacuated. The Paris accords were deemed a failure because South Vietnam was "pressurized into accepting an agreement that virtually ensured its collapse."
Does any of this sound kind of familiar?

(38,400 posts)trump thought he could convince Putin for a 4 to 5 month cease fire. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in October...a cease fire is declared, trump gets the award and putin starts hostilities again after the first of the year.
But, putin wasn't buying.

(21,029 posts)With regard to the Peace Prize, the will of Alfred Nobel stipulated that it was to be awarded to the person "who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". Over the course of time the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded in recognition of many different kinds of peace work and concepts of peace.
In the earliest years of the Peace Prize - up to World War I - the prize was often awarded to pioneers of the organized peace movement. In the inter-war years, the focus shifted to active politicians who sought to promote international peace, stability and justice by means of diplomacy and international agreements, but prizes were also awarded for humanitarian work (Nansen, the League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees).
Since World War II, the Peace Prize has principally been awarded to honour efforts in four main areas: arms control and disarmament, peace negotiation, democracy and human rights, and work aimed at creating a better organized and more peaceful world. In the 21st century the Nobel Committee has embraced efforts to limit the harm done by man-made climate change and threats to the environment as relevant to the Peace Prize.
