I never thought anything he said anymore could surprise me or be so out there that my jaw would drop, But he did it tonight. He said one of the most stupidest, ill advised, and just jaw dropping foolish things I've ever heard from him.
He's actually quoting Putin as a reliable source on the 2020 election; This is what he said on Fox after today's meeting;
Vladimir Putin said something, one of the most interesting things, Trump said. He said, Your election was rigged because you have mail-in voting. He said, Mail-in voting every election. He said, No country has mail-in voting. Its impossible to have mail-in voting and have honest elections. And he said that to me. It was very interesting because we talked about 2020. He said, You won that election by so much, and thats how he got it. He said, If you wouldve won, we wouldnt have had a war.

I am just aghast, and I'm waiting for a country wide realization that the guy has just full out lost his mind.

(43,398 posts)Get your facts straight if you want to go around spreading your hopelessness.
The fact is that states overwhelmingly control the voting, mail-in included.
There are only a few areas where the federal government has laws, like for overseas and uniformed voting.
Saying goodbye to mail in voting shows you dont know how our voting system works. These comments of yours almost always attribute power to trump that he doesnt have.
Whose side are you on, anyway?
SSJVegeta
(2,991 posts)I suppose they do to some respect. But not nearly to the degree that you are suggesting.
MadameButterfly
(4,131 posts)They have re-remembered that it helps them too. I'm not sure Trump's lapse due to Putin's flattery necessarily has to be followed up with action.
SSJVegeta
(2,991 posts)The only question is how far does that action go?
MadameButterfly
(4,131 posts)Yes, that is followed up by action. But those aren't lapses. Those are plans. He's getting us used to the idea to normalize it before proceeding.
This could have been a lapse, if it was truly raised by Putin. It might not be part of his plan.
But he will have plenty of plans lined up to rig the voting, and if he thinks mail-in voting will make it harder to rig the election, then it will go.
SSJVegeta
(2,991 posts)Now that he knows how far he can go with other things and get away with it, theres no doubt in my mind he will take further steps with this. If he can remember.
MadameButterfly
(4,131 posts)Someone convinced him it would help Republicans, as it had in the past.
I don't doubt that his demented brain will likely forget that logic and go back to his earlier conspiracy theory about it.
SSJVegeta
(2,991 posts)As much as it is to get rid of all voting. He has also been clear about that for a while. Again. Our saving grace could be his ailing health.
MadameButterfly
(4,131 posts)one piece of getting rid of voting altogether. But that could motivate pro-democracy forces to get out the vote in other ways.
It will be more reliable to gerrymander and purge voting rolls, with more bomb threats on election day.

(34,290 posts)Oh they will never go that far nonsense
Or but theres laws against that
Same people probably will tell us they wont end gay marriage rights or abortion rights
By the way I say things in definitive ways to try to get the attention to people, unfortunately it doesnt seem to work like:
Dont trash Hillary or we will really be sorry
Or
MAGA is gonna go along with imprisoning or killing us (the pushback we got from that was incredible)
Yes I say things in very absolute ways with the hope of getting the attention of the people that keep saying oh they wont do that.
Oh and yes I know voting laws are determined by the state, but didnt we just see the department of justice announce theyre going to look into eliminating state laws that interfere with their opinion of what good government or good business is. Yes

(6,519 posts)And those votes have had historic consequences:
In the 2,000 Bush v Gore election, several rural counties received overseas military ballots. Voters' names were on the ballots, but they lacked the voter's signature.
Local election supervisors advised the Republicans in Tallahassee. Personnel were dispatched to those counties and the operatives signed those ballots. Unsigned Democrat ballots went uncounted.
This issue was largely ignored by media, other than local weeklies, because the numbers of ballots were deemed relatively insignificant -- maybe a few hundred. Plus, the election had dragged on long enough.
However, once the courts ruled and Fla's election was certified, Bush won the election by only 537 votes.
NJCher
(43,398 posts)I suppose you think trump is going to ban voting by mail. Do tell how hes going to get 50 states to go along with that.

(2,991 posts)We haven't quite proven him otherwise yet. Have we?
As I said previously, Trump wants to end all voting and has made that clear. He has also made clear he is willing to use the power of the executive to color egregiously outside the lines in the most illegal ways possible, with some fairly significant success.
There hasn't been a ton of success yet to stop his illegality.
NJCher
(43,398 posts)Is your subjective measure.
Its still laughable and at this point, not worthy of my engagement.
SSJVegeta
(2,991 posts)On one hand I really want you to be right, and perhaps there is good reason to believe that. On the other hand, there are deeply concerning things happening quickly which do not seem to be getting the attention they need to in order to be prevented.

(4,131 posts)I'm sure when Putin brought it up, Trump forgot, or believed, or fell for the flattery. Whether he follows up on it is a crap shoot. He knows there weren't 7 mail in ballots for anyone.
Probably Putin said those things and knows how to bamboozle Trump. Or maybe Trump just made it up, imagining that quoting Putin would somehow be extra convincing to Americans. Because he thinks we are all as impressed with Putin as he is.
We all knew that this meeting had nothing to do with diplomacy.

He is deranged enough to think claiming that Putin agrees is actually going to support his claim.
I know Magas aren't known for their critical thinking, but I really think if they actually heard the news (instead of the Fox etc. bubble) even they would figure out that Trump has lost it.

(6,323 posts)And then said if you had won there would not have been a war! Wow just wow!!!!!
MadameButterfly
(4,131 posts)Does he mean Putin's 3 day invasion would have succeeded without US help, and it would have remained a "military operataion'--or whatever it was he was calling it while it was illegal to call it a war. (Now, according to Trump, Putin is calling it a war?)
Is he claiming that somehow Putin would not have invaded because????
Does he claim this would have retroactively altered the invasion of Crimea and Donbass in 2014?

It's also possible that Putin tossed his puppet that load of crap when the Kraznov started talking about the 2020 election, with which he is still obsessed.
Needless to say, that is an entirely inappropriate topic to raise at a summit meeting ostensibly focused on ending the war in Ukraine.
