Why would they have the meeting in a military base? AK is being built up with military to protect the Arctic shipping lanes. There would be a lot of information that would be useful to the Russians, who want to control those lanes and the resources there. The people with Putin would surely be able to interfere with intelligence stored or accessed at the base. The person in charge of detecting such interference is a 20-something former grocery clerk.

Was there ever an explanation for having it there? He shared sensitive intelligence with Russians during his first term. Why would he not so the same thing now?

He’d prepared and got the Clustertrump (who are 3rd string JV) to agree to it. Trump is engulfed in his own press and wants to grab a Nobel Peace Prize.

A nation’s leader being seen with the POTUS at all is a big win. On American soil is just bonus. The leader of Russia doing both. Touchdown.

Trump initiated this whole DC thing because social media wanted cover and revenge for the DOGE boy getting beat up by 15 year old kids.

He’s seeks acceptance and praise at the same time. He’s easily manipulated by the cool kids - influencers.

2. Well there is a major incompetence factor.

The meeting location was determined before they looked for an actual venue. DJT rushed to get it scheduled to distract from the recent Epstein blow up. None of the toadies realized that July and August are the peak tourist season in Alaska (the incompetence factor). There were no hotels that they could commandeer for the meeting because they were all booked 6 to 12 months ago by tourists. That left the military base as the only option. (Well I suppose they could have used ICE to clear out one of the hotels). I don't know anything about former grocery clerks (grocery, that's a word, a nice sounding word, that hardly anyone uses any more). However, I think that the military running the base have qualified intelligence officers and security protocols to guard the data. They would not be posting their latest plans on the bulletin board in the lobby. As for DJT he could share sensitive information wherever the meeting was held.
