___Norwegian outlet Dagens Næringsliv reported on Aug. 14 that Trump called Norway's Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg in July regarding his chances at winning the Nobel Peace Prize. The international accolade is bestowed by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, who are appointed by Norway's legislature.
"Out of the blue, while Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg was walking down the street in Oslo, Donald Trump called," DN reported, citing sources. "He wanted the Nobel Prize and to discuss tariffs."
Stoltenberg told Politico that the call preceded Trump's chat with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and involved U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
We discussed tariffs, economic cooperation, and it served as preparation for his call with Prime Minister Støre. I will not go into further detail about the content of the conversation, Stoltenberg told the outlet in a statement.

According to Reuters, Norways Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg was walking down a street in Oslo when the unexpected call came through. Out of the blue, Trump launched into a discussion about trade and tariffs before shifting to a more personal request. He told the finance minister that he wanted the Nobel Peace Prize, an accolade awarded by Norway that has previously gone to four U.S. presidents. Trump has had a long-standing fascination with the award and believes that he has earned it through his foreign policy achievements.
The timing of the exchange is notable. On July 31, the White House announced a 15 percent tariff on imports from Norway, matching the rate already applied to the European Union. Norway and the United States remain locked in talks over the matter, with Stoltenberg confirming this week that negotiations are ongoing. Trade tensions have been a point of friction, and Trumps decision to link them, even indirectly, with his quest for the Nobel has raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles.
It is not the first time Trump has brought up the Nobel Peace Prize with Stoltenberg. The Norwegian paper reported that the topic has surfaced in previous conversations as well. Trump has repeatedly argued that his record on foreign policy merits recognition, often comparing himself to Barack Obama, who won the prize in 2009 during his first year in office. Trump has openly questioned why Obama received the honor and has suggested that his own administrations achievements are far more deserving.

The Nobel committee is selected by their parliament but thats quite a stretch from an executive branch Minister.
Every year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee selects laureates from hundreds of nominees. Its five members are appointed by Norways parliament in line with the instructions of 19th-century Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. Winners are announced each October in Oslo.

(130,472 posts)Jens Stoltenberg is walking down some street in Oslo and his cellphone rings, he takes it out of his pocket, sees the caller ID, thinks WTF?? and against his better judgment takes the call, then has to listen to some bizarre tirade from Trump about how he totally deserves the Nobel Peace Prize and he'd damn well better get it if Norway doesn't want to get hit with crushing tariffs. Stoltenberg finally ends the call and walks into the closest pub, maybe thinking he should have just fucking retired after his term at NATO was up.

If he could buy it, he would. Like his comments about the Kennedy Center Honors and giving it to himself.
