Putin telling Trump what he will 'allow'

The Associated Press @AP
Putin told Trump he would allow the U.S. and European allies to offer Ukraine a NATO-style security guarantee, envoy Steve Witkoff says.

NEW YORK (AP) — Special U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff said Sunday that Russian leader Vladimir Putin agreed at his summit with President Donald Trump to allow the U.S. and European allies to offer Ukraine a security guarantee resembling NATO’s collective defense mandate as part of an eventual deal to end the 3 1/2-year war.

“We were able to win the following concession: That the United States could offer Article 5-like protection, which is one of the real reasons why Ukraine wants to be in NATO,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” He added that it “was the first time we had ever heard the Russians agree to that.”

...this isn't the demand of a great nation defending democracy. It's a supplication to a war criminal who's being allowed to attack Ukrainian civilians with impunity while Trump co-opts that savagery to cowardly surrender to what Putin will allow.

What a swift climb down from a nation that prided itself for generations as a defender of democracy and freedom in Europe.

Instead of bolstering Ukraine with the security forces we have in place to defend the countries right beyond their doorstep, Trump is bowing to Putin's demands and his phony pretext for his attacks, and kowtowing to his insistence that Ukraine can never be allowed to fully join NATO; an alliance that Trump has actively sought to disband in contradiction to generations of presidents committed to our national defense against Russia.

All of this subservience to and enabling of Russia as they attack an ally in that region isn't just an abandonment of Ukraine, it's a deliberate dereliction of defense of our own national security.

Why not just NATO?

Why a faux-simile of NATO?

After all, Putin isn't directly attacking NATO, he's attacking an ally who wants to be included in NATO.

Why allow Putin to circumvent that?

The man is another Trump flunky who completely flubbed earlier meetings with Putin. Who was the interpreter this time? Another Russian, perhaps, whispering sweet nothings into Witkoff's ear?

Nothing Putin says can be trusted. Vlad is the same sort of serial liar as Don-the-Con.

Just smarter.

Which is why having EU leaders accompany Zelensky to DC is a very good thing.
