Suspects in Texas ICE shooting tied to trans, anti-fascist activism

DALLAS — Just after dusk on July 5, the crash of wood and metal suddenly reverberated through a predominantly Black and Latino neighborhood here known as The Bottoms. Neighbors peered out to see a small army of men in desert camouflage and tactical vests crouched behind a black armored vehicle, shouting commands toward a brick house.

A SWAT team had smashed through the front door of the residence, which neighbors say was occupied by several transgender women, part of a group of activists who initially united around trans and queer identity issues. Now, the women, dressed in bathrobes and pajamas, were being detained at gunpoint, neighbors said.

“It was weird enough that six or seven White, trans people moved into the neighborhood,” said a neighbor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of privacy concerns. He rolled a joint and gazed at the plywood-covered front window: “And now the FBI is raiding their house.”

Eleven people have since been charged with attempted murder and terrorism-related offenses, and at least three others with aiding their escape or concealing evidence.

Inside the house in Dallas, officers discovered nine firearms and a person wanted in connection with the shooting, a transgender woman named Autumn Hill, according to charging documents. The other residents were released without charges. Ten days later, authorities arrested Benjamin Song, 32, a Marine-reservist-turned-anti-fascist activist, and charged him with firing one of the weapons recovered at the scene.

The fact that there was at least one trans person involved in the original incident was noted in early coverage.

Edited to add:
"True" as in not-fake-news, which is different than "accurate." Also, lists of guns and gear, while interesting, don't indicate very much in states where hundreds of thousands of other citizens own the same items.

6. Well, eventually it's going to happen. That's a given; history rhymes, after all.

Victims won't always just lie down and take it just because politically, that's the strategy that will end up with the least damage overall; hoping that Democracy will eventually win out.

There are still people getting destroyed. It's just not seeped into a significant number yet. There's still plausible deniability of an economic crash, or impact on the public in general.

There is still too much of a brainwashed or mind-numbed minority of "middle class" and "working professional" people who actually believe that they could still live comfortably if 2/3rds of the country just disappears.
(I'm not counting the Tech Bros, Finance Oligarchs and other Money Hoggers, they live in their own private fantasy bubbles that can only be breached when their private security deserts them and the guillotines start getting trundled out...)

So, it's been starting in dribbles and drabs. Fun and games at first.
I'm just hoping Blue states and regions are prepared to manage the Federal takeover attempts as more marginalized groups start taking matters into their own hands.

We really need to leverage democracy more. We should be seeing every single person who is a legitimate (not self-elected) spokesperson or ally of these groups denouncing the nutball types. One person, one vote. That is not self-defense!!! Self-defense is when you are responding to an attack on yourself. The gang planned this out well in advance. The group who did this was not attacked, nor were they targeted or provoked. They were not arrested by ICE. They went to an ICE facility armed and ready.

Federal court documents that were unsealed earlier this week say that people wearing body armor and black military-style clothing descended on the Prairieland ICE detention facility in Alvarado late at night on July 4. They carried high-powered flashlights, two-way radios and set off fireworks toward the detention center, according to the court documents.

They allegedly carried cans of spray paint and wrote “ICE Pig” and “Traitor” on cars in the parking lot. A person in a green mask standing in the woods reportedly signaled as correctional officers approached the people spraying graffiti.

Department of Homeland Security officers at the center called 911. When an Alvarado police officer arrived, the shooting began. Court documents say two people in the woods, including the person wearing a green mask, shot about 30 rounds of bullets with AR-15 style rifles. The Alvarado police officer was shot in the neck and is expected to recover from his injuries.
