They spoke, one by one. Trump looked like he was listening. But, then, he responded with something that had nothing to do with what the individuals said. When one leader spoke about the children in Ukraine who had been kidnapped and relocated, Trump responded by talking about trade agreements. He did not hear nor did he register the discussion about stolen children. It was as though he didn't hear it at all. He nodded politely, but heard nothing.
Trump probably does not actually understand what they are saying, so he nods knowingly and says something positive. That what he says doesn't relate to what the other person has raised is so obvious. It's also frightening to me, frankly.

(150,508 posts)Things are just not registering in his brain. So, he says irrelevant things. A common dementia symptom.
My Mom had Alzheimers, my Dad had dementia. trump is plainly demented.

(12,369 posts)That staggered walk down the red carpet in Alaska is a potent physical sign of dementia. I've seen that out-of-whack gait and balance issue in my own family. I lost both my dad and sister to Alzheimer's.
My father also had profound hearing issues but refused to wear an appliance. He, too, would smile, nod and pretend he could hear conversation when clearly he could not. As his cognitive decline worsened, the deafness became a side issue. I also have hearing problems--deaf in my right ear and a deficit in my left. Before wearing hearing aids I was the smiling, nodding guest trying to piece together whatever was spoken. Or, as Trump does, frequently asking people to repeat themselves. He does this a lot during press conferences, even bending his head (probably his better ear) toward the speaker.
I have no doubt about the dementia. We're watching cognitive meltdowns in real time. Some are worse than others but they're getting substantially worse and are far more frequent. There will come a time when the man will slide into a babbling mess and won't be able to come back regardless of medication support.
I've seen it happen. It's not pretty. For others, I feel nothing but empathy.
For Donald Trump? Bring it on.
as well. Reminds me of my dad. He would just nod, no comment on what someone said because he didnt actually hear what they said.

(2,174 posts)Trump is old and mentally feeble. It happens to most of us who are fortunate to live to his age. He is already beyond the US male life expectancy and has done very little in his life to exercise his brain or any other muscle.
I do think hearing is one of his issues. I am a professional sound engineer, and I have always tried to protect my hearing as much as possible. I can still discern very quiet sounds at frequencies 25 hz to about 13,000 hz -- much better than average for my age. But in noisy environments I have great difficulty discriminating conversations. And this is why many people have hearing aids. Trump's ego probably prevents him from getting hearing aids.
But his bigger problem, obviously , is dementia. He really can only hold the simplest of thoughts, and his short-term memory is near non-existent. As a person who spends a lot of time in memory care environments caring for my parents, I see this age-related dementia every day. Trump is nearly 80, but he has a level of dementia that would be much more typical of a person age 90-95. He should be in a locked memory care unit for his own safety, not to mention the safety of the rest of the world.
FWIW (and I have no medical qualifications in this area) I doubt he has Alzheimer's Disease -- just very pronounced age-related vascular dementia. He shouldn't drive a vehicle or do anything else that requires cognitive stability.

(33,090 posts)Everything is always about him. On top of that, he has clear signs of some sort of dementia, which is obvious to all of us who have seen it, either clinically, or in a family member.
It's beyond belief he's allowed to occupy the Oval Office. I cannot wrap my head around the incredible damage we are willingly doing to ourselves as a country by allowing him to continue in office.

And NO JOURNALIST ASKED HIM ABOUT IT, we could use some new MSM.

(12,369 posts)The six wars. Today I think I heard him say seven. He's even had Leavitt repeat the claim of peace negotiated across the world by the Great Negotiator.
And you're quite right no one calls him on it other than India's minister who was quite irate about Agent Orange claiming he solved the tension between India and Pakistan.
Journalists? Nada.
