I live in San Francisco. I've voted for Newsom every election he's run in. But the Maggot videos and "legitimate media" reporting will be brutal about this. Our last California Presidential nominee didn't make it to the Presidency.
These are legitimate concerns.

Hillary Clinton long denied she was going to run again in 2016 (edited from 2026 because someone pointed out I had the wrong year), but she did.
Perhaps Whitmer doesn't run. Wouldn't be the first or last time one of my preferred candidates didn't run. But we have a number of potential candidates I would prefer over Newsom. But if Newsom wins the primary, he's obviously better than whoever the Republicans nominate.

https://prospect.org/labor/2025-05-19-democrats-union-busting-governor-polis-colorado/

On Friday, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, vetoed a bill passed by the Democratic-controlled legislature that repealed the states sui generis right-to-work law. Colorado legislators had voted to pass the Worker Protection Act (SB25-005) by a 22-to-12 margin in the Senate and by 43-to-22 in the House, in both cases along party lines.
Existing Colorado labor lawthe Labor Peace Actwas enacted in 1943 before the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act enabled states to pass right-to-work laws that curtailed unions ability to collect dues from all the workers they represented in collective bargaining. Colorados Labor Peace Act prefigured those right-to-work laws in several ways. Under its terms, once a majority of workers vote to form or join a union, it requires that union to win 75 percent of the workers votes in a second election to be able to collect dues from all the workers it represents once it has successfully bargained a contract with the employer.
The difficulty unions have in clearing that second bara hurdle unique to Coloradoexplains in large part why the percentage of unionized Colorado workers is so low. Data from the Economic Policy Institute indicates that Colorados union density (7.7 percent in 2024) much more closely resembles that of right-to-work states (with an average of 6.2 percent in 2024) than non-right-to-work states (15.8 percent in 2024). Colorado is the only state with Democratic trifecta control of government to have such a law.
The bill Polis vetoed drew unanimous support from Democratic legislators, and from Colorado Worker Rights United, a statewide coalition of labor unions and worker centers. Given that vetoes occurring after the Colorado General Assemblys session cant be overridden, there isnt an opportunity for legislators to nullify Poliss decision.

Lawsuit Alleges Jared Polis Collaborated with ICE to Share Residents Personal Data
https://www.democracynow.org/2025/6/6/headlines/lawsuit_alleges_jared_polis_collaborated_with_ice_to_share_residents_personal_data
A new lawsuit alleges Colorado Governor Jared Polis collaborated with the Trump administration after it issued a secret subpoena to force Colorado officials to turn over personal information on residents sponsoring unaccompanied migrant children. According to the lawsuit, Governor Polis directed his staff to comply with the order, even though he had signed a law explicitly prohibiting such cooperation.

(5,013 posts)We need someone who will be a household name and have plenty of popularity in just over a year from now.
The candidate should already be stirring buzz by now. And not in a bad way.
As much as I love Pete B, if we cant elect an empathetic bright young energetic black woman, they sure as heck will NOT vote for a gay man.
They railroaded Liz Warren over her Native American back ground. It was disgusting.
Again, we APPARENTLY need a straight white male unicorn who is smart, but not preachy, funny but not goofy, strong but not authoritarian, and somehow old thru experience yet young with charisma.
Zelensky would do nicely if he was a US citizen.
I would love Newsome or Pete B. Also love Illinois Governor Pritzker. American voters are underinformed, fickle and vote for certain candidates for the wrong reasons.

(24,092 posts)It will be someone not named Shapiro or Newsom.
Currently, my guess is the odds favor Beshear or Murphy.
Current polls will favor Newsom due to name recognition and media visibility, but over the next 18 months that will change significantly.

Its worth noting that Newsom isnt just going after Trump as part of a presidential run Hes also doing it to help his state Trump hates California, wants to hurt it, and will stop at nothing. Newsom is out front challenging Trump on every front, doing what he can to protect his state That counts for a lot
