(3,422 posts)There has to be some element of hope as a prerequisite. It falls flat with me nowadays.
In a way, comedy is a kind of normalization of the times. When you realize the axe can fall at
anytime, that too many of your fellow citizens are checked-out chumps - and degenerate fools...
attempts at comedic relief are patronizing.

(69,648 posts)I've noticed that a lot of internet humor seems to be an excuse to say racist, sexist, and other kinds of bigoted things - all while pretending it's hilarious and "just a joke."
That's an old excuse.

(69,648 posts)It's been Putin's strategy for over a decade to divide and confuse American and Western European voters. One strategy is using the internet to reach people - especially young men - in their niche groups. It's not surprising to me to see internet influencers and niche groups, such as gaming sites, filled with encouragement to be racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, antisemitic and generally despairing of any hope or forward movement.
It's part of the strategy to divide and conquer.

(8,299 posts)Although he gives his very uneducated, misinformed thoughts on so many matters, to millions of young men, it was comedy where he got his start.
Many of the other " bro" types got their start in comedy. Now they are supposedly " king makers"? I didn't realize till recently that he was the host of the tv show Fear Factor. He had hair back then.
I don't find any of them funny.
Their brand of comedy is a way to bully others. The few times I've watched any of them, when they are not bullying and being mean, so much of it is potty humor. I mean literally.
That's fine if you like that kind of thing. Stick to that. How do you go from having discussions about whether dragons exist to " seriously" discussing policy and health matters?
Someone mentioned that early on his podcast, when he started having experts in various fields on his show, he seemed genuinely curious, now it seems as if he's attacking experts - I guess he "did his research".
This video is an interesting take on that whole genre. Its almost cult -like - in the way MAGA is.
I admit I was late to the party to understand the reach and hold these " comedy" podcasts have.
Its interesting to see other young men noticing their " right ward" pull and starting to criticize them.
I posted another video recently of other comics being critical of this " enmeshment" of comedy and politics.
To be fair, there are left leaning comedians that comment on politics - But its a different type of commentary. It seems that Rogan and the Bros have really designated themselves as king makers, able to shape policy.

(10,437 posts)totally sucked me in. Extremely good analysis of not just current comedy in the US, but current US society in general. Lot's of really scary stuff in there. I always knew Joe Rogan was an asshole, but I didn't realize he was such a fanatical extremist. Oh, and he's mind-numbingly stupid as well, but that was always kind of obvious...
