Historian Tad Stoermer on DC invasion

He is on tik toc and he is occasionally on his Bluesky account.
My summary of his points:
He asks if this is a hinge moment. When a government directs its military force upon its own people it often ends badly. He believes the vibe set off by Trump’s actions has echoes in Boston 1770, DC 1932 bonus army and Kent State 1970.

He said putting the Guard or state militia of the old south (South Carolina and now Mississippi)into (whether intentional or not) a city that is majority black that has a complex history with civil rights and federal authority (riots of 1968) is creating a witches brew. The Guard from the Trump states are mostly conservative and rural. The city is urban, progressive and diverse.

When a state turns its military inward, it’s broadcasting to the entire world that it thinks its civil institutions are no longer relevant. So the upshot is the story will be about what happens when the tools of war are in servitude of a regime’s politics and historically there have been many bad endings to this type of story.

Just some worthwhile thoughts from a historian.

This is a minor point, but Kent State occurred on May 4, 1970 -- my 16th birthday. rsdsharp Aug 2025 #1

When the regime falls:

There need to be many bad endings.
