I think that the most that we could hope for from maga Republicans is a few percentage points knocked off Republicans' totals by voters who stayed home.
But every bit helps. And the Republicans shaving their margins thinner to gerrymander more might make it possible to flip a few districts.

(22,876 posts)I'm plenty old, but I had no idea what the Slauson Cutoff was and had to google to find out. From what I've gleaned, I would have to have either lived in the Los Angeles area and/or been a regular viewer of Johnny Carson during a certain time frame. I was neither, so that phrase meant nothing to me, and I'm still not sure what time frame was involved.

It definitely helped if you lived in the Los Angeles area, or were at least in LA County.
At about 2:40 in, Slauson cutoff.

All but one made me laugh till I cried.
The only one that really made me cry was his last night.

(90,775 posts)What a run Johnny Carson had! A job that kept him at the top for roughly 30 years. And for many of those years he went for 90 minutes a night. 11:30pm to 1am, five nights a week. He kept many of Americas insomniacs good and friendly company for all that time. Steady and lots of laughs, and didnt mind at all when the laughs were on him. I worked at NBC back then and there were many who spoke of him in hushed tones. I heard at one point back then that his Tonight show was generating one quarter of the networks entire revenue every year.
Sorry. Im spoiled. When Rachel Maddow bailed after 10 years, I felt jilted. Im still trying to be sympathetic but Im not getting very far in that effort.

(11,005 posts)And then I'd watch Tom Snyder after Johnny!
Somehow, Johnny was even more funny when he would bomb. I love that he was never afraid to laugh at himself.
Here's a perfect example, only 3 minutes long.
How lucky you were to work at NBC when he was there!
I don't know why I never thought to get tickets to go see him in person. For those of us who devotedly watched him, he really was a part of our lives. I have missed him ever since he left the show. Although I wouldn't exactly call what happened to him as leaving the show. It was more that he was shown the door. He sure didn't deserve that.
I'll bet you know this. After he left The Tonight Show, he would often write jokes and send them to David Letterman. And Letterman would use the jokes on HIS show. I don't think he told that story until after Johnny had passed away.

(29,791 posts)...and having it land in the crotch of the painted figure on the turning wooden wheel. Carson's deadpan face was perfect.I crack up every time I watch it, even if it is 5 times in a row.
Another one I remember was him pretending to eat one of the potato chips collected by a little old lady who kept those that she thought were shaped like real-world items. The look of horror on her face was so real. You'd have thought he's just taken a bite out of her dog or something.

A couple of my favorites were;
when the marmoset peed on his head,
and when Don Rickles broke the wooden box on Johnny's desk, when Rickles was guest hosting. Johnny discovered it when he got back, and he took the cameras over to the next studio, where Rickles was actually filming a show he was on. Never laughed so hard.
The Ed Ames bit is classic!

(53,540 posts)These are the sort of people who consumed large quantities of reality TV to the point where they didn't know what actual "reality" was anymore. I figure they eventually got bored with such programming and decided to create their own reality TV world with a reality TV president. Really scary.

(394 posts)their only source of self worth and superiority is built on one thing only: owning the libs. Everything Trump has ever done, or even done to them, will get a pass, a shoulder shrug maybe, as long as it hurts others worse, and pisses off the libs, it's worthy of forgiveness by MAGAs.
We are all hoping there is something so revolting and repulsive in the Epstein files that MAGA will turn against him. Most of all things possible are already out there if you know where to look. That Trump was raping underaged girls? that Trump and Epstein were in the sex trafficking/blackmail operation together? They might forgive him for all that too. But what is that something that Trump is so terrified about that could be revealed to be so revolting it would ruin him in the eyes of MAGA? I have my suspicions, and something tells me it involves Ivanka
