(5,250 posts)What a stupid thing to get upset about! Some people just aren't happy unless they're pissed off about something.

(7,417 posts)I'm old enough to remember when Cracker Barrel would bring huge platters of food for family breakfast and biscuits better than almost anyone can make at home. The kids even liked the grits.
Very few family priced restaurants have held onto that level of quality over the years. I mean... at this point even the "large" eggs are what used to be mediums.

(85,446 posts)It's exactly what you find outside of their restaurants and is some of what makes them welcoming. But trends change and now it's all about simplification. I don't think they are sending a political message. They are keeping up with design trends.

(1,298 posts)"Soda crackers used to be shipped to old country stores in large wooden barrels to prevent the crackers from breaking apart during the shipping process. Back in the day, country stores were a gathering place for many communities; somewhere folks could catch up on news, local events, and their neighbors lives. Sounds like a familiar place, right? So, when barrels were empty, they were used as makeshift tables to hold a checkerboard, a conversation or both."

People hate it when you mess with their nostalgia.

(1,795 posts)The masters/owners were called sir, ma'am, or similar.
Cracker is now a slang term for a racist white person. And believe it or not, not every white person in the South is racist. Not even close. People should look to their own backyard before they call others names. I have two words for you: Jersey shore. Talk about "rednecks", FFS.
thesquanderer
(13,147 posts)My guess is that today there are more people aware of the racial slang use of the word "cracker" than there are people who are aware that crackers ever came in barrels. Maybe this is why MAGA folk are so upset about the change.
On the plus side, at least they didn't name it Crackkker Barrel.

(85,446 posts)The trend is to simplify, and many popular brands have done it. This video is from 3 years ago:

(1,795 posts)I've seen this sort of thing happening for a long time, even when I worked for an "institute of higher learning", half the people going there could barely read, and certainly couldn't figure out how to fill out applications for anything, even a parking permit. The thinking ability is being taken away from people so they can be fooled by stupid MAGA shit, since they no longer know how to use reason and logic to solve problems.
It reminds me of the book "The Handmaid's Tale", where the red-garbed baby makers went "shopping", and there were no words, only pictures of the items they could chose from. Women couldn't read, it was punished.

(4,945 posts)there really isn't that much there (bisuits, yogurt with granola, and a fruit plate iirc, plus juice, tea or coffee). Haven't been to one in a long while, i think the one near us closed down and thought i read somewhere that they were closing about 2/3 of their locations.

I mean, its fine. Most chain restaurant food is perfectly fine. Not great, not terrible. Its good if you want to know what your getting will taste like what you are expecting.

(53,479 posts)The one with the (presumably) grandfather and the wooden barrel would have been hell to print, especially on uncoated paper like you'd use for order pads or on fabric like a t-shirt or a cap. All the little detail in it would plug up too easily.
An easy example showing why you'd do this:

Meet Pat Patriot, the old official logo for the New England Patriots football team. Because he was so hard to print, they changed the official logo to this:

I still don't plan to go to their stores simply because Cracker Barrel is a "home cooking" restaurant and if I want home cooking I've got a perfectly good kitchen to do it in.

Our country is has been over run by a populace that have been addicted to rage for a LONG TIME.
Going back to the 90s when AM radio and Rush Limbaugh and the thousand of other local Rush wanna bes were droning on about limousine liberals and all that other rubbish, losing their minds over animated children's movies for this or that.
That is all this is ... Wake up in the morning and the first thing they saw on cable new now the internet they work themselves up in a lather over over how the evil liberal boogyman is attacking them.

(12,630 posts)I dont live near a Cracker Barrel, but when I travel, I love going there for breakfast. And I even love the kitschy gift shop. (But then, I also like IHOPs Swedish pancakes.) My dad was a professional chef and he taught me never to be too precious when it comes to food. Try everything, and be open-minded about the cuisines of other cultures. Including MAGA.

(2,725 posts)I try not to let these idiots outrage me cause thats really what they want but I just cant when I get on Facebook and see people saying go woke go broke with a screen showing Cracker Barrels stock price. How in the ever loving hell is this woke? I got some BS answer about taking out the colonial guy cause it had slavery connotations or something. Im convinced that theyve given their sorry lives meaning by fighting woke even though they cant even tell you what woke means.

(7,378 posts)One company I used to work for had roughly the same logo for 90+ years. But as they did more sponsorship, events, etc. it became very apparent the current logo just wasn't going to work on smaller screens. So they went to a company that speacialized in this and they chose a logo that still maintained some of the old features, but far more modern and easy to spot on a phone, race car, etc.
Guessing Cracker Barrel was running into the same problem. With that said, looks like they went on the cheap.
