The Trump administration has reportedly refused to fully fund the increasing security needs of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. His protective detail has expanded dramatically that the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), which usually investigates serious crimes within the military, has reassigned hundreds of its agents to focus and guard him instead.

In normal circumstances, roughly 150 of the CID’s 1,500 agents are assigned to VIP security responsibilities. Since Hegseth joined the Pentagon, officials cited that the number of personal assigned for the protective duties has increased to “400 and going up,” with another source citing the figure at “over 500.” The immediate increase is that agents are now carried with expanded protection not only Hegseth and his current wife, Jennifer Hegseth, alongwith the one child and three stepchildren, as well as his two former spouses and the three children he shares with Deering.

In a statement, a senior CID official told the Daily Beast that Hegseth has “never requested additional protection for his former spouses” nor has he ever “affected CIDs recommended security posture.” The official further added that the CID “operates within existing resource constraints” but that “specific details regarding threat assessments, security protocols, resource allocation, and budgetary matters related to either investigative or protective operations are considered sensitive and cannot be publicly disclosed.”

Funding Requests Denied
CID leaders have reportedly submitted a request for additional funding and personnel to handle the growing workload. However, Trump’s team refused to approve the full package, providing only a fraction of the requested support. The refusal emphasized ongoing tensions between the requirement for high-level security and the administration’s fiscal priorities.
