We really don't live in a representative democracy

Yes I realize that this is a right-wing talking point.

But with the emergence of MAGA it becomes clearer every day that the system of government that the founders delivered to us always had within it the seeds of tyranny.

It comes down to four features that are designed to take away your right to just and fair representation.

Gerrymandering to tilt the House to over-represent a tyrannical minority
Two senators per state in the Senate, to over-represent a tyrannical minority
The electoral college, designed from day 1 to over-represent a tyrannical minority
A President that has enormous power to go around any checks and balances that might be in place

I no longer believe we have the ability to overcome these fundamental weaknesses and that we are doomed to fail as a free nation. Not sure I know where things will go next, but in the next 41 months I full expect the Fascist Right to cement their power for the long term.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
