European, Asian postal services halt shipments to US after end of de minimis tariff exemption

Postal services in Europe and around the world plan to halt shipping merchandise to the U.S. as the Trump administration’s end of the de minimus tariff exemption goes into effect.

The "de minimus" exemption allowed internation carriers to ship goods valued under $800 to the U.S. without paying any duties.

The White House announced the end of the exemption weeks ago, linking it to fentanyl and other illicit drugs coming into the U.S.

DHL, Europe’s largest shipping provider, said in a statement on its website Friday that "Deutsche Post and DHL Parcel Germany will no longer be able to accept and transport parcels and postal items containing goods from business customers destined for the U.S." effective immediately.

... $20 for a prescription that costs over $600 here. Fortunately my Canadian pharmacy was able to max out my prescription and send me a year's supply, but I'm just waiting to see what happens with meds from Canada once this kicks in for real on Aug 29. My pharmacy is not sure what will happen -- What will the price hike be? -- Will meds even make it across the border ... ie, are they going to crack down on inspections?

I'm gambling that people are going to freak out, and that TACO will prevail. We'll see ... and w e'll see if the pharmacy can come up with a work-around.

Our postal service would absolutely be bankrupt if it was private. The cost of a letter stamp is ridiculous. Yet I can order rubber dog shit from China and the postage on it will be less than a dollar. Full knife set from China…less than a dollar. If I ship my mother a small package of chocolate in the US…it was $16.

China has preferential postage as a developing nation forever. Which subsidizes China and is a big reason why we can produce those goods here or at least choose not to. China needs to pay the same postage as everyone else and help support our postal service.
