Most districts are a lock for either the Democratic Party or the Rethugs. Congresscritters like it that way. But, if you adjust things enough, you get districts that become closer to swing districts, and in a wave election, it can be disaster. Sorry if this old baby boomer sounds paranoid, but I still remember the drubbing we got in 1980 with the Reagan wave, I never want to see that again.

5. Yes, redistricting for partisan advantage can backfire in a wave election...

...But in 2026 the probability is much higher for a blue wave election than a red wave election. In the first off year congressional election of a president the opposition party almost always picks up a significant number of seats AND polling now indicates that generic Democrats hold a 5 point advantage over generic Republicans for Congress. That indicates a Democratic wave of some sort. If it is big enough Republicans may screw themselves in Texas by shifting more of their seats from safe to probable Republican instead, where they can end up as upset wins for Democrats.

It is very unlikely that Democrats would lose any seats in MD in 2026 due to any redistricting they might engage in now .

8. I agree about 2026

but in 2028, Trump won't be on the ballot, and a lot of never-Trumpers presumably would vote Rethuglican again, even if it was Vance as the nominee. We will do everything we can to tie him (or whoever their nominee is) to Trump, but it just won't work with some people. Also, our side will have a very bruising fight for the nomination, without it being anyone's "turn" or any other sort of heir apparency. Of course, we have to hope that the economy is in tatters by then, and I find it difficult to feel that way, even though I'm pretty well insulated from most financial problems that people have during a recession.

And, I don't know what the situation is in Maryland, but it probably is a riskier proposition in other Democratic-run states.

12. We're Already Gerrymandered

To benefit Dems. There's literally ONE Republican in the Maryland delegation. Andy Harris. Gods know that we would love to get rid of him and get a Dem in there. But Big Agriculture has gotten Eastern Shore people so brainwashed against Dems that they'll literally vote for someone who supported the J6ers. I honestly don't know how they're going to do gerrymander it even more.

It would probably be very difficult to reliably turn that 1 Republican seat to Democratic without endangering current Democratic seats.
