Climate-driven stress on food systems is hitting Americans in their grocery carts, again. This time, ground beef prices have jumped 10.3% since June 2024, meaning they're topping $6 per pound, according to a Time report.
Consumers are continuing to buy beef, but issues with supply, stress on producers, and extreme weather are disrupting the market.
The price of ground beef is exceeding $6 per pound, with steak up 12.4% over the same period, according to the report. This is similar to the recent steep rise in egg prices due to bird influenza outbreaks on farms.
Contributing to rising costs, herd sizes are the lowest they've been in almost 75 years, according to Farm Policy News, and it's driven by drought and high feeding costs. Food economist David Ortega told Time his research estimates these pressures could keep prices elevated for up to four years.

(1,880 posts)hadn't ate one in probably 10 years or so. My Dad has stage 4 prostate cancer and we didn't wanna cheap out so we bought 4 good sized Ribeyes for the occasion: came to $50. I've been a huge (red) meat eater my whole life but NO more folks. This is insane. My country meat market still has ground chuck for $4/lb when bought in a bulk 10lb pack. I buy two of them for $80 total and that lasts us a couple months. (3 adults in our household)
If need be we'll switch full time to being vegans. I don't wanna do it but I need to lose weight any way so let the chips fall where they may. I hate the Orange Stain's GUTS but this has all been headed straight to hell for a long time and now he's just making it worse of course.

(25,409 posts)I used to enjoy an occasional steak, and ribeye is my favorite. But I am afraid it will be a very rare occasion for me to have a ribeye in the future.
Worse yet, the steaks I am seeing in the store are not high quality. Often browning in color, with huge lips of fat surrounding them.
We are watching the intentional destruction of our middle class.
The very wealthy have made the decision to kill the goose that lays their golden eggs that made them rich.

(20,897 posts)I seldom eat beef anymore. I cannot remember when I had a steak last or Prime rib medium rare.
The Christmas Prime Rib will be over $200 I am for sure. It's the only time I buy it. Last year it was $17.99 per pound. This year at least $25 per pound at Costco.

(20,593 posts)HOWEVER in my view the narrative should be that its Trumps fault. Nobody in the media or elsewhere GAF about the influence of bird flu on egg prices last year. They all blamed it on Biden. Whats good for the goose

(34,286 posts)Screwworm can be a serious issue. Until they get more sterile flies, I don't know. I often source the USDA for things like this. Mainly because the media adds stuff to their stories. I find the USDA is more "to the point".
They shutdown livestock trade for awhile in 2024 due to screwworm. This year, it's been open and shut. In June, they reopened the ports and then in July the shut them down due to an increase in movement. Not everything is totally incompetent. There are scientists working at USDA.
A woman traveled out of the country and came back with a screwworm infection. I had no idea they could infect humans! I thought it was a livestock thing.

(20,354 posts)Next to the ground beef that was $6.
Upon closer inspection, they were a beef/pork mix, not pure beef.
Still bought a bunch because I use ground pork too, but it seemed deceptive.

*Not that these will continue to be accurate, what with the ongoing/forthcoming "regulations" under the GOP.
