He's probably trying to say something about the rare earth elements used in modern ferrites and magnets that are not available everywhere and controlled largely by China. But he's a, you know, idiot.
...in things like wind turbines and EVs (both of which he hates, of course). We could mine those rare-earths here, by the way; we just don't, mostly because they're so cheap when they come from China...that is, until they started to enforce national security quotas recently. Those rare-earth magnets (and rare-earth elements) are used in many everyday items of consumer technology: everything from microphones to electric guitar pickups. They're not just in the "windmills" and hybrid cars Trump hates so much. He is a total ignoramus when it comes to the economics of technology. It was recently noted here at DU that Trump is perpetually stuck in about the year 1965.
