Ukraine has suffered cataclysmic warfare, forced collectivization, starvation, assimilation and horrors of the Holocaust during the past one hundred and twenty years.

On the thirty-fourth anniversary of finally achieving its independence, Ukraine faces a new threat — transactional politics.

The country has resisted a full-scale takeover by the Russian Federation for more than three years, inflicting an estimated 950,000 casualties on the invaders. The nation’s fate is now, alarmingly, in the tiny hands of Donald Trump — at least in part.

Trump takes a transactional view of pretty much everything. He has spent an adult life doing deals, backtracking on deals, cheating on deals, and even publishing a ghostwritten memoir entitled The Art of the Deal.
