We're told they are being sent to major American cities to fight crime. The intention is to purge this country of all the bad people, to end crime entirely except for the serious crimes committed by corporate CEOs, Big Oil, or the steady legal rip off by Big Pharma. For Trump’s minions, the bad people are easily identified by skin color, or accents, or the work they do. It’s easy to find you, especially when your government doesn’t have to show you no stinkin’ badges or make a case against you. It's no one's idea of a free country, so we can just ignore that fuckin' Lee Greenwood bullshit that says at least we know were free. There are lots of conditions. You may not qualify.

We've been through so much of late, haven't we? Remember when women lost the right to seek an abortion? Remember when the Supreme Court decided that Trump could do whatever he damn well pleased so long as he held the highest office in the land? That was bad in and of itself, but it was also ominous. Remember the shock of learning that Linda McMahon, a wrestling mogul, was put in charge of the Department of Education with the obvious intention of eliminating it altogether. Remember when Kristi Noem went to El Salvador to stand in front of room full of men in cages who'd been hauled off without due process? Remember the brief news blurb about a 10-year-old child who was denied an abortion? Doesn't it dim the lights to know we now live in such a country? Remember when Trump and Vance and Marco Rubio ganged up on Zelensky in the Oval Office, chastising him for ingratitude? And then, of course, there is the unified pro-pedophilia stance of damn near every elected Republican extant. The future for young people appears perilous, as does our economy. The idea of home ownership for the working class has slipped beyond reach. Medicare is under assault from the right, as is Social Security, which has been a target for Republicans since before it was signed into law. People from other countries are a critical component of the caregivers for the sick and dying. Nurses from the Philippines, doctors from India, lab techs from Mexico, and a United Nations of people who may not have been born here mop hospital floors but have names that make the people who watch Fox “News” uncomfortable. They must be rounded up and shipped off, back to where they came from, along with those who harvest our produce or work in our grim and bloody slaughterhouses. No matter the cost, the objective is to get rid of untold millions, a small price to pay for making America great (and white) again. As God intended.

The things I see coming our way in the immediate future are things I can’t bear seeing for much longer. It's torture. Everything I was taught to believe about my country is being eradicated, dropped down the memory hole, replaced by a sci-fi dystopia that borrows heavily from Germany in the 1930s, or Moscow now. The purposes of every branch of government have been stood on their heads, everything is upside down, and if you want to go to the nation’s capital and visit the Smithsonian, you’ll only see a vision of America approved and sanctioned by racists and fantasists who, as children do, prefer cartoon reality in which the good people were all white and the darker people loved slavery, celebrating the blessings of being taken care of by benevolent masters who provided them with room, board, plus the succor provided by a Christian god and a book that justified their enslavement.
