DOGE team members uploaded a database with the personal information of hundreds of millions of Americans to a vulnerable cloud server, according to the agencys chief data officer.
Members of the Department of Government Efficiency uploaded a copy of a crucial Social Security database in June to a vulnerable cloud server, putting the personal information of hundreds of millions of Americans at risk of being leaked or hacked, according to a whistle-blower complaint filed by the Social Security Administrations chief data officer.
The database contains records of all Social Security numbers issued by the federal government. It includes individuals full names, addresses and birth dates, among other details that could be used to steal their identities, making it one of the nations most sensitive repositories of personal information.
The account by the whistle-blower, Charles Borges, underscores concerns that have led to lawsuits seeking to block young software engineers at the agency built by Elon Musk from having access to confidential government data. In his complaint, Mr. Borges said DOGE members copied the data to an internal agency server that only DOGE could access, forgoing the type of independent security monitoring normally required under agency policy for such sensitive data and creating enormous vulnerabilities.
...his disclosure stated that as of late June, no verified audit or oversight mechanisms existed to monitor what DOGE was using the data for or whether it was being shared outside the agency. That kind of oversight would typically be provided by the agencys career information security professionals, Mr. Borges said in his account.
And his complaint cites an official agency security assessment that described the project as high risk and that warned of catastrophic impact to Social Security beneficiaries and programs if the database were to be compromised.
Should bad actors gain access to this cloud environment, Americans may be susceptible to widespread identity theft, may lose vital health care and food benefits, and the government may be responsible for reissuing every American a new Social Security number at great cost, Mr. Borgess complaint said. He alleged that DOGE did not involve him in discussions about the project, despite his role as chief data officer, leaving him to piece together evidence of what had happened after the fact.

The danger is what Musk can do after it is used as training data.

(9,150 posts)they also now have the banking information for where your Direct Deposit goes. I would strongly recommend that you open an additional account at your institution and when each deposit comes in do an immediate transfer to that 2nd account so that there is no balance left around in the one that receives the Direct Deposit. It would do no good to have SS use a different account because the scammers would try to come back in to the SS system and try to get that account you changed to. By having the 2nd account and doing a transfer by phone or online, I recommend by landline phone, Social Security never has that 2nd account number.
I do this with my business account that receives ACH deposits and then I transfer them right away to a 2nd account. That way the people sending me money never have the info for the 2nd account. Years ago I had someone do fraud on me by having the business account number that takes ACH deposits. Probably a crooked person in the back office at one of the many companies I do business with and it's fairly easy because almost all of them want you to send them a void check when setting up the ACH process. Then they also have your signature and tax ID on file from your contract paperwork to be set up with their company. So they have the bank, the account number, routing number, SS # or Federal Tax ID# and name, address, signature and phone number. Most of these companies are now all asking for a copy of your Drivers License as well.
