COVID rising fast in California, fueled by new 'Stratus' variant tied to Omicron

"COVID-19 is once again climbing to troubling levels in California — a worrying trend as health officials attempt to navigate a vaccine landscape thrown into uncertainty by delays and decisions from the Trump administration.

Public health departments in Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties have reported jumps in the coronavirus concentrations detected in wastewater in recent weeks. L.A. County also has reported a small increase in patients hospitalized with COVID.

"There is a lot of COVID out there," said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at UC San Francisco. "COVID is coming a little bit later than last year."

"The rate at which COVID lab tests came back positive in L.A. County is 12.6% for the week that ended Aug. 16, up from 7.6% a month earlier. In Orange County, it's 14.4%, up from 8.1%."

But this time not be so lucky. I can guarantee that Trump gets vaccinated. I'm sure his bout with COVID scared the heck out of him.

Or, even better, RFK Jr. gets a severe case of COVID.

My wife and I had a light version of it recently, but she and I both have colleagues (young and fit ones) who have been laid out with bad coughs and a fever for a week or more. We have started to mask up everywhere except for when we are walking around town and in our private offices. I have noticed more and more people in church every week masking, too, and it really dropped off in about April.

I told my husband we might want to start wearing masks again when we go into public places. I don't understand the MAGA mindset that wearing a mask is "weak" or that it shows you are "afraid". I just don't want to feel like cr*p if I can avoid it.

During flu season, everyone is always advised to frequently wash their hands as the most common way of spreading the flu is touching surfaces with flu droplets (which are much heavier and larger than COVID droplets, thus not as easily spread via air). So is it "weak" to wash your hands too?

So stupid....

He just recovered from a three year bout of Long Covid. He still masks in public, but the grandkids just started school two weeks ago, and spent the last weekend before school in Anaheim hitting all the non-Disney amusement parks with both mom and dads families. Who knows what they picked up on their week, or might have picked up at school.
Paxlovid is a godsend, he's already just hope Covid doesn't evolve to resist it.

She put out the word that Covid is alive and thriving in NW Florida.

The Mr. And I had a nasty case last year that we acquired either on a river cruise or returning via Paris. We were sick as either of has been in a long, long time. Maybe ever. It is no joke. The Mr. Had to take extra medication (after Paxlovid) due to rattling in his chest. Luckily that kept pneumonia at bay. But we’re old. And covid is no friend of the elderly.

Pay attention. This is not a drill. 🦠💊💉🔬🦠💊

All the stuff he does is in hopes of feeling better. But none of it works so he keeps doing worse things. It's his drug. He gets high on if for a few minutes, then crashes and has to move on to the next exercise in hurting people.

for which there is no cure, has no vaccine that is 100%, a president who downplayed and offered fairy dust, bleach, and horse medicine, a population that is so ignorant that dying horribly was better than admitting, oh, I don’t know, science, and it turns out it’s still killing people? And if we continue to talk about in the past tense on the NEWZ it’s all good?
And no more vaccines.

unknown. Schaffner says a mid- to late-September launch is “entirely appropriate,” because you don’t want to get the vaccine too far ahead of the typical winter peak.

We are in the Sacramento area as well and had it take out 3 of 4 family members about two weeks ago. No breathing issues, just cold and temp issues. We all took Paxlovid. Does the immunity still apply with these new variants? Trying to determine if I need to mask up.

Deaths per week was last week. All indications from the CDC is that this strain is milder than even last year. Take precautions…but don’t lose your mind on it. The CDC website has good data on it.
