Under pressure from Trump, Michigan Medicine halts gender-affirming care for trans youths
https://www.freep.com/story/news/health/2025/08/25/university-of-michigan-medicine-halts-gender-affirming-care-for-trans-youth/85825504007/Under pressure from the administration of President Donald Trump, Michigan Medicine, the University of Michigan's medical center, will stop providing gender-affirming care ― hormone therapy or puberty blockers — for patients under the age of 19, a spokeswoman for the medical system said Aug. 25.
"The University of Michigan, including Michigan Medicine, is one of multiple institutions across the country that has received a federal subpoena as part of a criminal and civil investigation into gender-affirming care for minors," according to a statement from Michigan Medicine. "In light of that investigation, and given escalating external threats and risks, we will no longer provide gender-affirming hormonal therapies and puberty blocker medications for minors."
The move left parents of trans children who receive care at the health system and their advocates taken aback and scared. "I'm devastated," said the mother of a 14-year-old transgender girl who takes estrogen and a puberty blocker and has been a Michigan Medicine patient for more than half her life.
"I don't want her medical therapy to lapse. I think it would destroy her life," the mother, who, along with her daughter, is not being identified because she fears they could be targeted. "She's just such a happy kid right now and she's been great for so many years. And you know, she wasn't before she had access to the care at U of M and they were absolutely amazing. ... The doctor is a wonderful man," the mom continued, growing teary. "He's somebody who just really got ... to know a lot of families and kids and saw that there was like this huge need for this type of care."
