These kids were literally praying as they were gunned down.
Well said.
Two kids are dead, seven critical and ten other folks are injured.

As long as Repukes hold any power it will never happen, and they currently hold all the power.

(9 posts)These students and staff WERE literally praying when they were shot. Its a Catholic K -8 school. They start each school day with a morning mass. They were literally praying at the time they were shot.
Im beginning to think thoughts and prayers are not the answer.

(1,308 posts)One day a mass shooter will go into a Board of Directors meeting, or Davos, or a Berkshire Hathaway meeting, or an Koch brothers event, and shoot up a bunch rich white men, the richer the better.
When that happens, guns will be off the street the next effing day.
Our country is such a joke. Absolutely sickening! This is what the end of empire looks like. 🤬. And we deserve it, we are a failed state.
So sick of this 💩!!!

(77,864 posts)After WW II Japan got rid of guns and guess what happened? They have almost no
deaths by guns.
How many mass shootings have we had in 2025?
Btw we have had 38 mass shootings in America since August 1st. A mass shooting
is when 4 or more people not counting the gun man or gun woman wounded or killed.

(114,676 posts)If you're a believer and you want to center yourself and do some really mild meditation, then it works just fine.
Otherwise, it's the worst sort of slactiivism on its best day.
That's probably a good thing, consider how many people pray for the opposiite thing their neighbor does, from fixing high school football games to calling down divine smiting of enemies, especially imaginary ones.
Doesn't matter if it's Sufi dancing, Buddhist hanting, Hasidic singing, thumbing your beads, or just on your knees and mumbling for an hour before bed, it can have a profound effect on your own psyche. Just don't expect it to go any farther than that.
Especially don't expect it to do jack shit about the carnage in the US that is coming from too many fucking guns in civilian hands.

We we're all happy and naked in the Garden of Eden, then we chose to make our own future. He obliged. Unfortunately, there are too many bad people out there and too many who enable them.

And if I did, I call on a higher power to do something (Abrogating responsibility)
People who use Tots & Pears as a response really need to be called out at every opportunity.
Questions like . . . OK, looks like God is busy, what are you going to do about it in the meantime?
(Handballing responsibility back to the cynics.)
Other countries have effectively cut down on death-by-gun incidents, so why not America?

(12,162 posts)Is the idea that they are communicating via mental telepathy with an invisible, undetectable, all-powerful being of some kind? Are the people praying to tell this "god" creature what to do? What is its response? Does any of this makes sense?
As a great philosopher once said, you cannot petition the Lord with prayer. Believe it.
malaise
(297,987 posts)His explanation was tortuous and illogical.
mwb970
(12,162 posts)It's when they add the part about actually communicating with an imaginary supernatural being, including telling this being what they would like it to do for them and expecting it to be done, that it sounds stupid and irrational to me.

(7,066 posts)theyll have nothing to say after the next tragedy. That is their only response. The only one. Every time. Sure, it comes in a billion variations, but its always the same: thoughts and prayers.
Their loyal sealions will offer weak follow-ups (we cant stop it from happening, may as well arm yourself, isnt it just like buying car insurance?), but without the anchor of thoughts and prayers, these meritless monotone monologues collapse into flaccid and ineffectual emptiness.
