JD Vance Faces Backlash for WWII 'Negotiation' Claim: 'Books Are Great. So Is History. Vance Should Try Both'

Vice President JD Vance has drawn sharp criticism after a clip of him claiming that World War II ended through negotiation went viral. Speaking on NBC's Meet the Press about Donald Trump's efforts to push for talks between Russia and Ukraine, Vance said:

"If you go back to World War II, if you go back to World War I, if you go back to every major conflict in human history, they all end with some kind of negotiation"

The remarks quickly gained traction on X, where many users pointed out that World War II ended when the United States and its allies gave the Axis powers two choices: death or unconditional surrender, with negotiated settlements off the table.

"History professor here: WWII ended with the unconditional surrender after Hitler killed himself in a bunker, Mussolini was executed, and Germany and Japan were occupied," said one user, while another one added:

"LOL. WWII ended with a negotiation? Tell that to the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To the citizens of Berlin. To the citizens of Carthage and Rome. Like everything else MAGA, Vance is stuck in the 1920s"

Others criticized what they saw as an erasure of American sacrifice. "It worries me that the vice-president and future Republican nominee for 2028 is a moron who doesn't know that WWII ended on the battlefield with the Allies demanding unconditional surrender," one post said, while another added: "Stop rewriting history to push your appeasement agenda."

Some framed Vance's comments as reflecting Trump's approach to Russia:

JD Vance doesn't know what Unconditional Surrender means? I thought he attended an Ivy League school, not some oddball christian academy in outback Alabama.
