(7,066 posts)Using prayer as nothing more than a prop to pander to weapons industries and their wee enthusiasts however, is a dangerous flirtation with faithless apostasy, and the radical American clerics who do so are urging their flocks into a deep, dark, narrow canyon. Precisely where Mr. trump wants them...

As they slide into the poison pit It'll take forever to climb out.
They carry the weight of the faithful who follow them down.
I love my church and country, they could use a little mercy now."
From her song, Mercy Now.

(9,230 posts)You mock the whole idea of prayer.
Prayer isn't a replacement for action. It's a call for God's love to help guide your actions.
But it appears that you have no interest in anything other than the illusion of caring.
Such is the way of JD Vance, and so many others like him.

18 But someone will say, You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believeand tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham believed God, and it was [e]accounted to him for righteousness. And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

"We pray because our hearts are broken and we believe that God is listening."
If your God is listening then your God seems to be content that you don't work energetically toward getting weapons of war off the streets of America. Other nations have been able to do that. One would think that your God would inspire you to do just that.

(4,746 posts)... only approves the Old Testament God. Y'know, that vindictive SOB that told Abe to kill his son to prove his devotion to Him. That's the God Vance worships; the one that says, "HA! GOTCHA! Just kidding. Well... aren't you going to say, 'Thank you?'"

Suppose someone's child is gunned down. If one of you says to them, "Here are my thoughts and prayers," but does nothing else, what good is it?
In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

(1,559 posts)God(dess) appreciates our appeals for intervention and assistance but certainly wants us to be at least partially active on our own behalf. At least, that is my belief set.
The old man who had asked god all his life to let him win the lottery, said please Ive been asking and praying for this for years. Why havent you answered my prayers? Finally god said Herb, buy a ticket!
