(100,133 posts)And that was it. Her friends were agreeing how dangerous vaccines were for their little ones, and I, who actually remember the last polio epidemic and the first polio vaccination programs, made the mistake of commenting that Old graveyards are full of infants and children under five.
The other thing I remember is public health info being included in my school textbooks nearly K-12. The lessons were included in both History and Science units, so there was crossover. Epidemics, nutritional diseases yeah.
What the ever-loving flip happened to US public schools? Oh, I know: charter schools.

If all/most of the content is contentious, better to avoid it.

(100,133 posts)Weve had a few reasonable convos. But I have to be absolutely sure not to stray into trigger territory or I end up repeating, I will not discuss Science with you.
I only go to FB by accident, such as an interesting-looking item posted at DU and thats how I learned my younger brothers wife has Parkinsons, which I passed along to our sister who lives 3,000 miles away on the East Coast. The feed just goes on and on but no photos of my grandkids appear because of this stupidity. So I stay away from all of it.

My mom couldn't get us down to the gym for our polio vaccines fast enough.
And I think we remember the black and white photo of a room full of iron lungs from Life magazine.

and the line of parents and their kids extended across the entire playground and down the block. My little sis was needle-phobic and threw an epic tantrum but Mom held her tight to save her life and health. Every school in the country had its share of survivors wearing heavy braces and using crutches. I have no sympathy, NONE, for todays mommies who think an injection is the end of the world.
When I was 15 I met a girl whose sister was in my high school. But this girl I met would never be in public school with her sister Mumps had led to Encephalitis and Encephalitis left her completely blind and needing braces and crutches..
Down our street a wife whose polio as a child left her right leg 6 shorter than her left cared for her sister in law, who was a quadriplegic from polio at the age of 19.
I could go on, and on. The utter ignorance, wishful thinking, and fantasizing that afflicts this country in the 21st Century drives me bonkers when I think of it.
